My 1st road race in 6 years

I have been reading KB for a while now, i thought i would share my experince of last weekend

My full name is Scott Wilkins, i am part owner of MR Motorcycles in Pkekohe, i have worked in bike shops or Accessiory importes my whole life, i am president of the Pukekohe Motorcycle CLub which runs Harrisville MX track,
i will try to give reports on some of the racing i do, i basically ride every thing i can, in the last year i have ridden MX, cross country, SUper Motard, Trail rides and just play riding,

I have just started riding again after 8 months off with a shoulder that kept dislocating, now i have had surgery and are back ready to go,

I finally got my Motard wheels all sorted out for my RMZ450 and decided to give road racing a go again, i really want to do the street meetings this year so i thought i better get some practise on tarmac, I have raced MX for 20 years now and are pretty used to racing, i raced a 150 back in about 99 at some of tim gibbes winter series meetings, this was the 1st time out on slicks and decent tires so i thought it would be interesting,

Got down on sunday and set up, had a look at a few other motard bikes and found that i might have trouble running with the way i had my brake line set up, a quick change and i was ready to go, thanks to Dave COle for lending me some tools i didn't have

1st practise was a bit scary, i made the mistake of going out with the 1st bunch and a few guys gave me the shits, i had forgotting how close you can get to each other on the tarmac safley,

2nd practise and i was fealling a bit better, still not trusting the front anywahere near enough,

1st race and i deceided to line up near the back, i got a really good jump and got though the riders in the row in front of me, , decided to try to push though the inside of run one, about 10 people had the same idea as me and i didn;t make up any places, infact a few riders went around the out side of me, ended up haveing a good race with Nigel BEvan on his 550 HUsaberg for a couple of laps before taking a lap to pace a old CR500 2 smoker, pretty good effort for 19th place,

2nd race and i decided to start form the outside of row 3, got a good jump and went around the outside of turn 1, and into approx 16th, had a really good battle with Chris Andrews on his KX450f, he ended up passing me around the outside of the sweeper heading towards the dragstrip, at this stage i wished i had not sold him the wheels to go motarding , good race again for 19th again,

we got told that we would not get a 3rd round, some of the motard bikes had signed up for f2 as well, (since we could not cross enter f3)
so Myself and Chris decided to snaek another race in,

this race i finally got some balls and trusted my front tyre grip, got a better start and took to the outside again, i made up a heap of places and rode alot better, about lap 2 acky (Ian Atkins) came around the outside of me (still must be riding like a girl to be passes around the outside twice in a day) i stuck with him for a lap and he showed me some better lines, improved immensly in this race,

all in all i had a good day racing, the new short circuit at taupo in awesome on a motard bike, i still want a motard racewith dirt and jumps in it, as i make up alot more time on the off road sections,

it was awesome to watch Sam Smith in action, watching him from the pit wall backing it into turn one was awesome and i hope he can run top 5 in aussie.
I have known SAm since he raced 80cc mx bikes, man he can sure push a R6 around.

it was enough fun i might just have to do it again soon,

Good stuff and well done. Welcome to another KB'er race report.
"...New Zealanders, for all their faults, have virtues that are precious: an unwillingness to be intimidated by the new, the formidable, or class systems; trust in situations where there would otherwise be none; compassion for the underdog; a sense of responsibility for people in difficulty; not undertaking to do something without seeing it through - "

Damn, that puts an end to my bullshit story of owning MR motorcycles at Puke... Oh well, I'm still pretty cool even if I don't own a bike shop.

    Welcome to KB Scott!

So, this is motarding, right? What *is* that all about? Like, the curious cornering?

I'm not taking the piss, I really want to know. Why do it like that? Looks bloody dangerous.
