Whats the craic with bold thread titles

My threads titles aren't in bold and most others are

Why do some users post thread titles in bold and not others? If I put in the bold it just displays these characters in the preview.

Sorry, not important I know, just wondering if there is any reason for this..... I feel like the kid at school who wasn't let in on the secret.

All threads unread are bold and since you created that thread, it can be safely assumed you've read it.
Same goes for why it doesn't appear in the new posts list until somebody else posts in it.
90% of the time spent writing this post was spent thinking of something witty to say. It may have been wasted.

Be careful - Poos might get you to meet him behind the bike sheds to show you his secret!!
They shall not grow old as we that are left grow old.
Age shall not weary them nor the years condemn.
At the going down of the sun and in the evening,
we will remember them
