    Server tuning

Server has been having memory usage problems so to avoid having my server rental cost increased by getting more memory added, I have asked Jelsoft (vBulletin provider) for tuning help.

Following their recommendation I have turned off Show Users Browsing Forums, Show Users Browsing Thread & Automatic Similar Thread search. I may turn them back on after following the rest of their suggestions. Does anyone find these useful and wants to see them turned back on?

I have to say that I'm pretty impressed with vBulletin support. Not many software providers would also offer server tuning support.

If there are any LAMP tuning experts here, feel free to make any suggestions.

Only use I've seen for Show Users Browsing Thread is so people can (falsely) accuse me of modding a thread by removing posts. Make it go away thanks lol.

As for Automatic Similar Thread search I've only found that useful occassionally. Not enough to warrant keeping it.

biggest thing with servers running bulletin boards/forums/email etc is keeping the hdd defragged. makes a huge difference!!!! we had that problem at work here with our email server.
is there an option to turn old posts into pure text etc like some other forums?
    delete some old crap etc.
got room for more ram? someone might have some spare somewhere.

    Arrow Speed is good.

if it makes it go faster then it can't be a bad thing...

    Thumbs up

Have you got somebody tuning the MySQL db as part of the tuning package? Would make a bigger difference rather than resorting to removing functionality from the site?

if its costing you too much - maybe its time to get a $20 a year - optional membership going. i'd be in.
    gone.
