LCD repair (techo's?)

I have a 15" lcd screen im purchasing off work if I can repair. if I pull it to its bare minimum and plug it in. it works fine.

I put a part of the casing on and it does what it does before I started looking at it. you plug it in, it works fine for 10 seconds then the backlight turns off. pull the power out and put it back in works for another 10seconds then backlights go off.

any thoughts?
ps: no damage to boards, wasnt dropped, looks like its in pristine condition.

Often its things like ribbon cables (self-explanitory) failing due to the fine wires inside fracturing. When you put into the case it maybe moving the cable to the point that it wont work, but on the bench its laid out and makes contact. Try putting it out on the bench (when it works) and wiggling the cables a bit, watch the backlight then. Dont touch anything nasty for chr1st sake.

The 10sec thing implies a constant time thing like a power supply circuit over heating and turning off. Im at a loss sorry.

Ah... I see your problem. Win2000 .
Looks like the boards are in the 'installed position' when you have it in 'test position' anyway. Still recommend the cable wiggling method though. There could alos be dry joints in the solder etc but that wouldnt explain the 10secs of working then powering off.

It is a Compaq 1501

since it works so well when its 'naked' i might just leave it like that.
plan is just to hang it on a wall with something like a aquarium screen saver or something.

ive jiggled all the cables to no avail. I suspect no it may be something to do with earthing and the screws holding the assembly together.

could be a grounding issue Check all the bolt holes and if they go through anything other than casing/check the back panel.

Another possibility is heating. Most chips have a thermister built in to stop the thing overheating and frying stuff. Maybe it's shorted somewhere and not enough heat is dissipating when in the enclosure.If there are breather holes try running a comp fan or something into them with the case on and see if it runs for a bit longer...

I am thinking of a wooden frame, like a picture frame. also wont conduct

i tested it some more and figure. some cardboard here some perspex there, I might be able to run it safely 'caseless' also looks much cooler without a case

Hell If it is an overheading problem... Drill a few holes (probably 2-3mm ) over where it is getting hot and buy a $5 computer fan and bolt it on the back. 10minutes later you have a custom cooling system for your monitor.


p.s. is it overheating?? I'm kinda curious?

case it in a frame of perspex, would look the shit. The glue you use to stick/melt perspex together is insanely strong, so if you make a box on the back you could mount it on the wall. All you need is a drill, the perspex, ruler, a scribe and a table edge.

Drill holes in the back/sides of the box to let the heat escape. Scribe deep lines in the perspex and use the table edge to break it straight. Then glue it all up.

the screen is working perfectly in its nakedness. im using bluetack,double sided tape and cardboard to hold all the boards on nice

which is basically a tiny computer

plugged my laptop hdd in and basically its booted (a bit driverless atm)

now I just need some graphics drivers and a graphics demo of some sort (ie aqaurium screensaver) and im finished. the whole thing is 15" lcd tall and wide and about 6-7cm deep.
