Ride to Akaroa - Queen's Birthday Weekend

hey, i know the brass monkey is on this weekend. but, if some people are not going, im looking at going to akaroa on the weekend, not sure what day yet.

a friend is coming down from blenheim and he wants to go for a ride over to akaroa and thought i would show him the path, so if anyone is keen let me know.
will put details up closer to the time

What are the roads like over that way at that time of year? Are some of the shady bits slippery at all?

The air temp has a lot to do with it. I ride over regularly in a group - particularly during the summer months . Obviously the road gets damp in winter months during the night and the air temp during the day dictates how dry the road surface actually gets despite having a clear blue sky on occassions.

As a rule of thumb, we don't use the old Taitapu road in autumn (because of damp leaves on the road) and winter (because its just not worth the risk). We take extra care on the hills particularly after the frosts start, due to grit being laid. (Its not always signposted by Fulton Hogan as I found out last year going around a 25km/h corner and had an off as a result.)

Best (and warmest) time is generally between 1130 and 1430hrs which roughly allows 1hr getting there, 1 hr there and 1 hr getting back.
The tread goes around that far for a reason...

Just came back from Akaroa today. 5 day visit, what roads you guys have to play on!!

Went round via Lewis & Arthur's passes and last couple days in Akaroa (rental car tho)

As for road contitions lots of grit on the roads, looking foward to these roads in my '08 SI adventure

08?, why wait so long?. yes we do have some fun roads to play on. especially akaroa road, has a bit of everything. tight corners, wide sweeping corners, long fast straights, gets me excited thinking bout it . . . too much now, got to go ride the bike lol

If anyones worried about the road conditions, shouldn't be too much of a problem around mid day etc. Doubt if I be going. It's a good ride but to me I'm suffering from over kill on it. I might run the inland route from Amberly through both gorges perhaps thru to Geraldine might run down to Timaru and back up highway one. It's a day trip.....with a bit of everything. ...........have not decided yet.

I'd hazzard to say to count me in, it's a great run with my new bike, simply loves those corners.

Hehehe, I wonder what he would say being called "Your mate" and not God or he who shall be obeyed...... (pt)

Have fun mate, Im at work, but I'll see you in the evening. Send me a text if you are needing to use the garage during the day so I can set up an alarm code and tell you where the key is going to hide
