    Dominic Jones USA Race report

I am posting these reports from now on on behalf of Dom

    Summit Point Raceway
    28-29th May 2006

    CCS National Meeting

    Classes: Unlimited Supersport
    Unlimited Grand Prix

    Practise and Qualifying:
Summit Point. Slippery point is what most people call it. The track is just over 3km long and is mainly 3rd and 4th gear corners on my Suzuki GSXR 1000 K5 with a slow 2nd gear section with lots of concrete patches that are not flat with the asphalt so thats where slippery point begins.

Practise went well as I learned the track and got the bike setup well to run over the uneven surface. Summit Point is known as a specialised track with alot of quick locals and some of the top privateers in the country turning up so I knew I would have to be giving it to it if some good results were going to arise from the weekend.

Qualifing went o.k. for the Unlimited GP ending up 6th on the grid. Can't complain with the second row. My qualifing lap was a wee way off the pole time but there was a group of about 4 of us within half a second so the racing looked like it was going to be good. As for Unlimited Supersport, the grid was choosen from entrys so I was back on the 5th row in 17th spot. Guess it could have been worse.

    Race 1: Unlimited Supersport
Got a good start and ended up about 10th out of turn one. Over the next couple of laps, I picked off a couple a lap to work my way up onto a podium position. On the last lap, I got passed back. I knew that I should beable to outdrive this guy down the straight as laps prior so I set it up to get a good drive onto the start finish and draft him to the flag. But things don't always go according to plan. On the last turn, we incounted a backmarker and the guy infront just got underneath him as I was left to wonder what could have been as I followed the backmarker through the turn. So 4th it turned out to be which wasn't too bad considering where I started on the grid.

    Race 2: Unlimited Grand Prix
The start turned out pretty good and ended up coming out of turn one in 3rd. The front guys were at the top of their games and slowley pulled away. I got into a good scrap with another rider and we ended up dicing to the flag. I got passed him on the last lap and played defensive to the flag to finish 3rd. It ended up the guy that won broke the outright lap record and the guy that finished second use to hold the lap record. So all in all, it turned out an o.k. day.

Now I have a break for a week and then its off to Utah for a couple of weeks.

    Have fun
    Dominic

Photos of his debut round in the AMA 2nd round at Barber Motorsports.
Was still building the bike, just himself at the meeting. 46 entries, only 36 qualify. He qualified 31st, finished 27th and 24th.
Go to www.photoreflect.com. Go to "events" put in "Barber"
Then click on Barber II, dated 04/21/2006. There are 3 pages of race numbers, select racer no 264. Yep, that's Dom.

Yeah. Good to read of someone doing well overseas and not just the usual reports of us slow old buggers (well me and MotoBob anyway)... in NZ
"...New Zealanders, for all their faults, have virtues that are precious: an unwillingness to be intimidated by the new, the formidable, or class systems; trust in situations where there would otherwise be none; compassion for the underdog; a sense of responsibility for people in difficulty; not undertaking to do something without seeing it through - "

Now he just needs a decent haircut

    Awesome stuff
"If you can make black marks on a straight from the time you turn out of a corner until the braking point of the next turn, then you have enough power."
