Increase in scooters in Wellington?

im finding now with high price of petrol there ar more and more scooters on the rodes of wellington and a lot of these guys are really starting to bug me it use to be in welly if you pased another scooter you would get the nod frm them but now its only office workers on them with no idea how 2 ride and dont wear a protective gear and dont even wear a full face helmet i wana know are these guys into bikes or just trying to save a dollar and not even enjoying the bikes

I've noticed some pretty expensive looking scoots about. Riders seem to vary from flappy skirted women with no protective gear to the fully kitted up office worker in shiny black leathers.

I can't help smiling when a Twin-thou thunders on down the quay.

If you waved at me I might nod or wave back - but it's precisely because there are so many scooters that it just isn't possible to wave at everyone! What a waste of time that would be. There's another thread on this elsewhere.

I only wave at people I actually know - or if they're riding an older vespa that I really like.

Or, on long distance trips (obviously not on the vespa 50), I nod or wave at a motorcyclist if its the middle of nowhere and it's actually a bit of a surprise to see a bike.

Who gives a stuff why people are riding their scooters? Why is it your business? Are office workers not allowed to ride? And from your lofty position on your jinjian 50 - do you not think you are part of the wave of new scooterists and moped riders that have flooded the roads?

You can't protect other people when it comes to gear, other than chat to them and suggest they replace their open face with a full face helmet, and perhaps wear gloves, etc. No point preaching to them, just set a good example.

Thursday nights fatal crash and injury might be a bit of a wakeup call for some local riders - but in the end, if you're old enough to buy and ride a moped/scooter, you're old enough to assess the risks and decide what to do about it.

The whole idea of a scooter was that everybody can jump on one....I also grew up when helmets weren't compulsory..big deal!
Before nana took over we were encouraged to think for ourselves...

Scooters are ideal for a city like Wellington, good on fuel, easy to park and where can you go over 50 k anyway?....and eventhough not on par with the hardout full on biker , I bet you they enjoy their 2 wheeled experience just the same.....

I used to find that they were quite easy to move and manoeuvre if they had parked on a stupid angle, most of those tiny ones don't seem to have any lock.

Ive just started taking my bike into town, it sure beats the 50minute bus ride from dixon street to newlands!!
