    Media in East Timor

The Brigadier in charge of Aust forces in Timor was asked by an Aust TV frontbimbo whether it was still dangerous in Dili. He was shown with heavily armed troops around him.
He said that he actually felt quite safe, and not just because of the troops the TV crew had arranged to be with him.
    Sprung!
He was then asked to comment on footage of rioters in the streets, he said the the footage was two days old. Things were calmer now.

The point is that it was stage managed, the crew set up the shots and made out it was current.
Danger is sexy, makes for big ratings.

Stop coming over and asking him for sexual favours then.

Shit man, we've moved 3 times in the last 3 months and you still find us. Must be that Telecom insider knowledge.

No TV at home. Is harder to stage manage radio interviews!

(Not that people don't try...I work at a PR company, praking clients' cages, the spin machine I witness is impressive in its scope and persistence.)

    Cynicism is healthy.

Take a subject you are well informed on, look at the errors that creep into media coverage of it...then extrapolate similar errors into stories about all other areas...then apply the cynicism you've just cultivated to everything in the media.

Unique BD? Nyeh - I just watch the spin from the sidelines...interesting in an odd way.

Phurball, I think the emphasis in BD's comment was WORKING at a PR firm.
If a man is alone in the woods and there isn't a woke Hollywood around to call him racist, is he still white?

Got it now (doh) There's 'work' done alright (by more than just my general-dogsbody-self) - but it does all seem self-justifying.

'Tis that time of year when studenty types keep funny hours and suspend normal reality for the furious cram. I blame that (in part) for overloaded neurones failing to connect with BD's witticism. Goddam wireless net access letting KB distract me from the final opinion I'm *trying* to write. Feck!

Yeah - just a gag - but FWIW - I think carrying bricks is work.
Publishing houses, art departments and PR gigs are some of life's pleasures.
