Trouble with Broadband!

Get the stats off your adsl modem / router , If your crc / fcs error counters are incrementing then your've more than likely got trouble with the line between yourself and the exchange. (Telecom to fix)

One thing to check , if your running your connection between throught a zap catcher / power filter check to make sure that it's compatable with ADSL otherwise this could be causing your errors.

Thanks Mooch! Once I've got my son-in-law to decode your advice I'll check it out... (I'm just a simpleton in these matters). LOL!! Haven't got a zap-catcher or anything but the standard inline filters. But it's working fine now, so maybe they've they found a problem and fixed it.

Possibly that too. The thought did cross my mind. I do have a bit of trouble with the future Son-in-Law using up our allocation really quick, though. I've just been cut back to dial-up speed again as the Broadband (10gig!) is gone! Sigh! Well at least it'll all be over in couple of weeks as they, (daughter and fiance), go to Aus on the 15th to prepare for their wedding and of course after they're married they'll be in their own flat and Rudy's downloading will no longer be our problem! HE does question whether he is using it up that fast though, so how can I know if the usage rate is accurate?

You can get software to install on your PC that will show exactly how much you are uploading / downloading, that should give you a rough idea. Either that or use the online usage meter and it goes down as far as giving you figures hour by hour of what your usage is.

If he is using torrents or other P2P software then you also need to realise that you are often uploading at around the same speed as downloading, so if you download a 100MB file on Bittorrent you will often have uploaded around 40 - 60Mb depending on your settings, so total usage for that file is actually 140 - 160Mb.

Thanks, Weasel! I'll ask him what he's using. All I know is that he has a wireless connection to our modem and downloads a lot of music and movie files. I was warned by Xtra techs that at the new speed I could use 10 gig in a couple hours! HAsn't used it up quite that quick yet. I think his record was two days, so far! I wonder how much I use when accessing links from posts, too. When are we going to be offered unlimited? Though, as I say, once He and Jen are married and on their own I probably won't need the 10 gig, either.

Very much doubt there'll ever be uncapped Broadband in NZ, they did it in the UK for a while and it caused a lot of problems, so most ISP tend to have caps now.

If you live in a residential area I'd also check that you've got WEP / WPA wireless security enabled on your wireless modem as someone else might be sneakily using your broadband connection if they're in wireless range. Doubt it, but worth checking just in case.

Interesting point. As you say, I doubt it, knowing my neighbours but how close would they have to be? I'm reviewing my security, ie. spyware and virus protection now. What would you recommend?

Dunno man, but I've picked up wireless signals of houses around 200m away before, and get reasonable speeds on them if I choose to use them.

Also, the security isn't in regards to your PC, it's your actual router itself, if it's an Xtra 604t then open IE, go to 10.1.1.1, enter admin as username and password, then go to Wireless Security and see what options you've selected.

That's a fair distance! Rudy's going to check his downloads to see how much he's used. The Router is a 3Com 3CRWDR100A-72 11g Firewall, if that helps.

Ah, freecom, not something Xtra supplied then, so support will be limited.

Suggest you dig out the manual and check what wireless security settings you're using. Pays to be a little paranoid these days.

Call the bb help desk and request that they go out to the exchange and to your house to check it out. if it turns out to be the port there will be no charge if there turns out to be anything else on the telecom side of things again no charge. if its your filters/modem/computer you might have to pay 149$ (unless the filters were telcom supplied within the last year)
