I went for a fang up to Waikanae yesterday afternoon. No warmer than 8 degrees anywhere on the ride up. Lots of cops out too.

I came home over the Paikak Hill Road -- the best I've ever ridden it. No other traffic anywhere. But a brisk 5 degrees down the valley until Pauatahanui, where the temp reached 7. Over the Haywards into the Hutt Valley. Still 7 degrees and no traffic.

There was a cop with a radar gun on that pedestrian overbridge before the KGB lights. He aimed it at me. I waved at him. He waved back. Lovely. I estimate I was doing about 118kmh at the time. It will be interesting to see what results.

By the time I reached the Kaiwharawhara lights the temperature had reached a balmy 9 degrees. Thank goodness for heated handgrips!!

My Pajero has a good outside temp thermometer - zero this morning in Huntly,-3 at Rangariri, fairly normal for a cold day really...but it was surprising how little the temps climbed as I got to Auckland,it was still only 4 deg in Manukau. The grass had a good crunch and my windscreen and even mirrors were iced up.

    Cool

Was so frosty here this morning my car was frozen solid! Doors were all frozen shut, engine wouldn't even turn over. I think I've buggered the starter motor These things always happen when I'm running late.

It was a mild -2 in Alexandra. So why does everyone call this the cold south?
