    Trouble with Broadband!

Any techie types got suggestions? My broadband keeps dropping out and I go back down to about dial-up speeds. I've rung Xtra 3 times now and each time they restart the Broadband but it only lasts a few hours. They've run tests on the line and the line is fine. I'm 3.8km from the exchange and they say the main exchange locally is only operating at about 2mb so I can't get the full 3.5 anyway. I can get about 2mb at best. I have to fill out a daily speed test form for three days and email it back to them. Any ideas would be welcome, thanks.

hmmm, lasting a few hours eh??

Had that, and all the Telecon rigamarole... have you installed any new programs recently?? I was trialling Trillian chat, and once I stopped running it, it stopping kicking out every 3 or so hours.

At the same time, telecom may have problems with its line, as they swore blind to me that all was OK, yet I read in the local rag shortly afterward, that it wasn't.

Also, when it kicks out, have you tried a power cycle?? That *should* fix it, but obviously not a permanent fix. If it keeps re-occuring, and the power cycle works, you may have to borrow a modem/router to see if its yours that is the problem.

My problem was that every time it kicked out, then my bluetooth accesspoint would give me shit for hours... sometimes I wanted to kill Telecon...

    Telescum.......

    Push them real hard.

Had the same issue down here in Hamilton. was getting 800 k and 320 k should have been 2 mbps ad 256 k.

After I had a week of techs here they tracked it to a "noise" source on their side of the demarcation point. They continued to deny deny deny for the whole week though.

They put in a splitter at their cost, my angle was they were not providing the service I was paying for by at least 50% so was going to take them to task over a 50% discount. As per consumers insitute has said all unhappy users should.

Downer Engineering were very enlightening about Telescums attitude towards it consumers, a little CC email certainly got telescum jumping.

demand demand demand from them, ask to go higher and higher in their opertation to find someone who CAN fix your problem, not just say they will.

Get them to email you all of the actions they intend taking, record ever start and finish time of conversations and who you spoke to especially let them know how long you have been kept on hold while waiting. It is a great conversation starter. How can I help you ...... just want to let you know I have been on hold for 22 mintues and 17 seconds .......

Do not buy in to - that is a telcom problem or an extra problem or a lines problem, remind them that they are they same company......

Long an short of it... telescum are connecting a whole of ADSL connections and not increasing capacity at the exchanges.....

Lowdest squeeky wheel gets oild first......

    Go hard at them.......

Yeah, they got me to reboot and switch off the router, a 3Com wireless.Connected by cable to the desktop and wireless to two laptops. Didn't make any difference. They did say that overloading could cause it to drop speed, but it's only played up this month. I checked my usage as I'd been "throttled back" after using it up last month and got the new allocation on the 27th May. I'm on the 10gig plan. Haven't installed any new programs that I'm aware of and my son-in-law did a clean up for me a opuple weeks ago and got the computers running a bit smoother. He's a tech trainer for Canon and knows a bit about computers but he's a bit busy tonight.

Longest wait was just over half hour... free phone from my cephone of course! The TEch staff I've spoken to have been very polite and seemed to be genuinely trying to fix the problem. Yeah bit restricted re: alternatives, eh? I'll keep ringing daily, though, like you say the "squeeky wheel" and all that.

The Sun and The Wind... An Aesop's Fable

The North Wind boasted of great strength. The Sun argued that there was great power in gentleness.

"We shall have a contest," said the Sun.

Far below, a man traveled a winding road. He was wearing a warm winter coat.

"As a test of strength," said the Sun, "let us see which of us can take the coat off that man."

"It will be quite simple for me to force him to remove his coat," bragged the Wind.

The Wind blew so hard, the birds clung to the trees. The world was filled with dust and leaves. But the harder the wind blew, the tighter the shivering man clung to his coat.

Then, the Sun came out from behind a cloud. The sun warmed the air and the frosty ground. The man on the road unbuttoned his coat.

The Sun grew slowly brighter and brighter.
Soon the man felt so hot, he took off his coat and sat down in a shady spot.

"How did you do that?" said the Wind.

"It was easy," said the Sun. "I lit the day. Through gentleness I got my way."

    Last time I rang them...
    "My phone isn’t working"
    Them; "Yes it is"
WTF? "Gee, sorry... I thought it wasn’t working due to the no dial tone and no one being able to ring me. Shows what little I know!"
Them; "We have just fixed the problem in your area and it is working now"
"Err, I’m standing next to the bloody thing and is isn’t working, it wasn’t working yesterday and it wasn’t working the day befor that when I first rang you.
I know you are all very sorry and etc, and I know you will show just how bad you feel about this by crediting this months account!
I will call YOU tomorrow if I have no phone.
    Goodbye!"

Phone was on that night and no bill, its caus I'm so nice that people do things for me.

Get the stats off your adsl modem / router , If your crc / fcs error counters are incrementing then your've more than likely got trouble with the line between yourself and the exchange. (Telecom to fix)

One thing to check , if your running your connection between throught a zap catcher / power filter check to make sure that it's compatable with ADSL otherwise this could be causing your errors.
