It was just a fucking huge embarassment to a country that is struggling to haul itself into the 21st century with piss poor power distribution, tranport and communication networks.
gezzzz now i distinctly remember not that many yrs ago when half of the states was without power for approx hmm was it four days to one week ... !!

guess ours is not that big of an embarrassment after all if the part of the good ole USA can lose power for an extended period of time .. whats 4-5 hours for one of our cities .. due to a winter storm .. (not like its the whole darn country)

When one broken earth wire can cause such a failure I'd say it was pretty fucking embarassing.

Unless you're proud of living in a third world country.

yeah good point .. guess some ppl need to expand their horizons a little further south ..

Quite frankly a situation like this has been building for quite a few yrs with population growth, and networks not being upgraded fast enough.

But alot of aucklanders really need to get their heads outta their asses and realise they are still not as hard done by as others .. thinking of ppl down south still snowed in still without power on the 2nd day ... their business are taking a major hit as well !!

The South Island snow problem occured naturally, in other words we have no control over the weather. The power issue in Auck was caused by "she'll be right" and too much red tape by Government. They didn't learn their leason when it was out for 5 weeks in 1998.

Auckland is the power house of NZ. No denying this. We need infrastructure!!!

proud to be living in nz? Damn straight !!

ppffffttt if you think nz is a 3rd world country ... the infrastructure is 50 times better than the 3rd world countries ... travel to a 3rd world country .. you then may be grateful to live in nz ..

or simple you can leave for another country that you think is world class !!

Yeah, I've lived in Nigeria. Don't ever remember losing power for 8 hours during the daytime, the odd blackout for an hour or so at night but that was about it.

    As for heroin

Auckland is New Zealands major city, like it or lump it.

Foreign investors don't say "hmmmm, looks like Alexandra got some snow, we might not invest after all". They will look at Auckland having two major power outages in 8 years and think that this is a country who can't plan, who doesn't learn, and why the **** should I invest my billions here......

Sure, the US had some power outages. Once. But do people trust the US economy? On the whole yes. Do people trust the NZ economy? Not without evidence, and we've just provided the wrong sort of evidence.

PS - Quote of the day from last nights news about the power in the sth island "if your power is still not on then it won't be fixed until tomorrow morning". How the feck would those people be watching????
