Shouldn't the power cos have similar backup systems?
probably .. but who would fund that ?.. since govt de-regulated, and they are run to make a profit for shareholders .. hmmmmmmm can we see shareholders investing back into infrastructure or wanting to line their pockets ??

ask any californian about power outages.
Yeah, but they've got more arse bandits per square kilometre than Ponsonby, therefore the latte consumption will be exponentially higher. The net result is a "brown out" when all the fags need a nice warm latte after a spot of up hill gardening.

Hey, don't let the truth get in the way of a good rant.

But good point. Ask the general non-US publics opinion of California ... looting, gangs, violence, earthquakes, civil unrest, movie stars etc etc etc.....

Ahh, I thought the same thing myself. Then I remembered seeing in the same story some hardy type South Islanders with their 12v battery and 12" TV. Once those people had seen the story, they would've sent smoke signals out.

No matter who runs it, there WILL be outages, it's technology and technology breaks sometimes.. hell, even my Starlet needs a tune up once a decade or so...

I was kinda lookin at a bigger picture.... and probably wrong.. again......
I think that it's been acknowledged that Transpower took the attitude that a good way to maximise profits was not to carry out maintenance.

Now I understand (and John might know more about this) they are looking to increase line charges on a localised basis to pay for upgrades and maintenance that should have been carried out as a matter of course by a prudent operator anyway.
