I had friends caught in the traffic jams and family without power until 1pm, it did indirectly affect me, but when i saw the state of the Sth Is on the box tonight i cringed and was immediately thankful for where I am right now.
Ahh least the CBD didn’t loose power for 5 weeks like last time. 4 - 8 hours isn’t to bad (Unless you are stuck in a lift ) and yes it shouldn’t have happed in the first place but shit does and will happen.
The power is still off in allot of homes down south and I send my sympathy for them as you don’t appreciate electricity till you have lost it. Won’t forget today dramas for a long time.

Think my emailserver (Exchange 2003) is going nuts - getting double emails exactly the same every time I get an post notify email from this website. Is it me or this website even though this websites server is hosted in the states?

yeah yeah whatever... I got sent home...so rode home in the most appalling weather... blasting down the Southern, getting blown all over the place... made it home, shed the gear, turned the heater on thinking "shit-hot!" then moments later the phone rings and I get called back into work, a sparky got the buildings generator going... UNBELIEVABLE!!! and yes! I went back in...

Hobart the same. Anywhere where trees grow faster than they can be cut back from all the wires generally - that's only from what i see out the window of course. (insert rude smilie here)
When I lived on Waiheke Island power cuts were a way of life - it was supplied with 3 undersea cables. In storms one was always likely to fail,or a tree taking out a powerline - we were well set up for blackouts.I had hurricane lamps on hooks on the ceiling by the back door, always full of kero, candles and matches easy to hand even in the dark - it was a well oiled routine as we jumped into action, everyone had their job.We were on tank water with a pump,so the bottom of the pantry was full of 3 litre water bottles,a gas bottle and single ring burner under the bench close to the stove....there was almost no break in the cooking as the pot went onto the gas burner. At work we never noticed, just drop the air gun and pick up a ratchet. It was a bugger when a car was up on a hoist though,we had to wind it down by hand, reaching the bottom just as the power came back on.

No one ever complained - we were tree hugging hippies, that's what we were there for,to experiance life on the edge.
