maybe us north islanders can head down on the 28th,stay in welly, then catch the morning ferry over, and head to chch that day, if we take it easy i guess we could land up there on 31st, after that i would guess we could take a week.
i have only been there 2x, and that was when i was about 12ish, so no bikes
thanks for offering a place to stay!
that sounds do-able.. i've never been to the south island, although i did go to the 'real' bottom of the north island..

Wicked! I've been wanting to ride around the SI ever since I started riding a couple of years ago. Cheap accommodation dosen't worry me. Last summer I packet a tent, sleeping bag, gas stove, food and changes of clothes all on my bike for a trip to the 'Naki - see pics. And the year before I rode around the East cape on my Virago 250 staying in backpackers for the night.

Aaaanyway...if you guys reckon you can do it for around $500 I'm definately keen.

Your the man slash. I got this little as tent I would crash anywhere with. Sleep on the side of the road thats cheap as. That looks like a bit of fun. I dont think my bike would carry that much though.

Despite my earlier post wondering if you had factored food into yr costs... I reckon you'll have great time. The first time I did the Sth Is it was for 6 weeks and on a shoe-string budget... we did LOTS of free-camping and ate alot of 2-minute noodles... plus we met nice folk along the way who gave us beds for the night!

Im a tentative yes. You chumps can sleep in a tent, just meet me outside my five star hotel in the mornin, ill have some bacon fat for you to chew over.

seriously tho, we did this sort of thing in a cage before. The first day it rained all day, and we ended up staying at a backpackers the whole time bar one night outside arrowtown.

Let me know if you need a place to crash or garage?

Gisborne (note: no "u") used to be the first city to see the sun, course with the moving of the tectonic plates that may have changed. Or may be Gisborne no longer counts as a City.

Or you could change your timing to April and do the Southern Cross

    I could be keen???

Wanganui 27/12, to Welly for an overnighter.

Welly - Picton 28/12, over to Nelson??

Sounds interesting, if only for the first part of the trip.
