Question The Disorganised South Island Tour dec 06

    The "wrong way round" tour
    here is the plan.
for a while, me and me buddies have been keen to go for a long ride, but being poor students, and min wage people it wouldn't be easy.
so, the idea came together one late night in a shell station
the plan, to go aroud the south island, with only a map, and to send as little as we can, kinda... roughing it.
most of us are 18-24 years old, on small-ish bikes.
the idea is, to go down one coast, and up the other, ie, a loop.
any bikers welcome, any bike, any gender, any age. (just dont complain at the slow speeds, shite quarters we stay in etc... )
we aim to do this for less than 500 bucks all up.
i will keep you posted on developments.
anyone keen or have questions, post below!
    cheers
    carver

I take it this will be a different tour to the "North invades South" thread?
They shall not grow old as we that are left grow old.
Age shall not weary them nor the years condemn.

    we will remember them

I'm going down next Feb and have estimated 3,500kms in total. My bike does 300 kms to a tank at current petrol prices of $22-$25 a tank... Thats $290 and a ferry crossing is $80... are you planning on eating??

Good luck guy's! A few years ago a mate and me went hitch-hiking round the top half of the South Island with only $50 cash. We just set up tents wherever and had a gas burner to cook on. However it was summer and the temp was around 28-30 degrees for most of it so I wouldnt recommend doing that way in winter. The South Island is beautiful and the people are really friendly! Have fun and take lots of photod to remember it!

    Arrow dec

    its in december,
maybe more than 500, depends on where you start from
my honda goes 270 km on $12 gas and my KLR goes 380 km on 30 bucks
anyhow..this will be done as cheaply as possible, with no organisation from me, (book your own tickets etc...), good for newbies, should be something to remember too.

Sounds like a good idea. How long you thinking of going for? 500 leaves little for food and booze but I guess It could be done if the booze(or food depending on whats more important at the time) is cut out.
You know you had a good nite when you have to ask someone if you had a good nite.

getting lost in the middle of nowhere sounds like me.

any estimates on how long it will take? what percentage of the trip will be spent on the bike? any definite destinations?

must upgrade before hand tho ... the fxr does get painful

grr need to get a cell phone ...

DAMN this is gonna be awesome.. I'm gonna start putting quarters in my piggybank

haha.. and when we get to Invercargil (spelt with only one 'L' to save ink), we can do some drag racing on the beach, like in the World's Fastest Indian

u know with a good group of ppl, you could rent holiday houses type places along the way and it'll end up being quite cheap per person.

I'll be quite keen on joining u guys and travelling cheap... but must have a good warm bed at night

I have been down SI twice... so can act as a bit of a guide too

    plans?

well, we would aim to be in christchurch on new years (first city to see the sun).
maybe us north islanders can head down on the 28th,stay in welly, then catch the morning ferry over, and head to chch that day, if we take it easy i guess we could land up there on 31st, after that i would guess we could take a week.
i have only been there 2x, and that was when i was about 12ish, so no bikes
thanks for offering a place to stay!
