I'm a little puzzled with Sniper's suggestion that we eschew reasoned debate in favour of baldly presented disagreement - all too easy and simplistic.

Seriously though, there are some pretty well-argued posts on KB(occasionally). That's a good thing in my book. Dumbing down and over-simplifying is not. Next people will be unable to form cogent sentences, or punctuate, and will only be able to communicate in 'txt spk'...oh...hang on...

The problem always seems to be that there are differences of opinion of what constitutes an opinion, and what is personal abuse.

If someone says "In my opinion you're a cunt", is that a valid opinion or not? You might feel abused and insulted, but who are you to deny the other person's right to an opinion?

My view is that one has the right to have an opinion, but in general should not express that opinion when it may cause offense to others - this is called personal restraint. Posting stuff that causes offense is what I think is generally called anti-social behaviour and in the long run only causes more grief than its worth.

There seems to be many people that think that while it is ok in their peer group to make offensive jibes in jest and to use derogatory terms about other people, not everyone finds it funny - especially those who are on the receiving end of the jibe.

There is an old rule - what goes around comes around. So if you dont want to receive shyte, dont dish it out in the first place and if it was accidental, it would be your responsiblity to modify the post when requested to.

I was quite surprised that SARGE made the post that he did, considering that when I asked him by PM to change a post he'd previously made that I found offensive, the end result was the following quote:

At the end of the day, it really is up to the moderators to be moderating. To me moderating is not about deleting the odd post and sending the odd don't be naughty email out, its about educating people on how to make good posts, develop a good neutral writing style and having respect for other individuals.

There is no such thing as a wrong opinion, there are just differences in opinion. At the end of the day its not the difference of opinion thats the problem, but how people react to it. Some people need to look at themselves? Gee thats a surprise...

Just been reading a few threads that I was "actively" involved in as well as this one and had to laugh at all the posts where you could almost feel the dislike or hostility eminate from them. Hell, even mine were included where I got so involved in battling with someone I lost the big picture. Its a bloody great laugh.

Everyone on KB has differing opinions from Iraq to what bread you like to eat and why. Im just as guilty as the next person when taking a thread too far but when someone has to resort to personal attacks of a persons character, thats going too far. Wolf and I had vastly differing opinions of what was said in a thread, but not once did we stoop to a level as to lay personal insults.

Not once, but by more than one person, I have been labled as a racist because of what I have said. Remarkably funny because of the fact that the people labeling me as such have no idea what I am like. I still have friends of a different coloured skin (Not going to call them blacks because thats racist) back in South Africa that I email regularly and even chat to on the phone, but who were they to know this? Hey I can't blame them for thinking what they do based on what I have written, but implying that is a different measure.

I will never threaten personal harm on any fellow KB'er, no matter how hot under the collar they make me. But its interesting to see har far certain folk try to push me. Hell, I know there are folks who look at my posts and hate seeing them, I know that Im on peoples ignore lists, but Im not one to care about that really. I think a few people on here are idiots, but it varies from post to post.

To me KB is a place to meet people and discuss stuff on an intellectual level. I may think you are an idiot, but I still wont pin that on you when if we meet. Those I have met know that in life Im happy to sit in the corner and not say much until spoken to (Unless Ive been drinking) but who would know from an 11000+ post count?

I have no problem with anyone on KB. I clash heads with certain people but I will still give you a bed of coffee if you are ever in the neighbourhood. But personal attacks an insults on people should stop. If you have a problem discuss it with the person or a mod, dont make it public because as I have found, people do take sides and it can turn ugly.
