The family should really sue the justice system, its really quite pathetic and inexcusable.

The first offence for drunk driving should be as it is, 6 months disqualification, afterall some idiots will make a mistake. However any further occasions after that are simply inexcusable, anyone caught driving drunk a second time should be sentenced to a minimum of 6 months imprisonment. A third time 3 years and after that preventive detention should be introduced.

The publics right to safety should be paramount, in *all* sentencing, unfortunately it rarely is until the recividist offender does something so horrific but completely predictable, that the justice system has no choice, ie William Bell etc. It should never have to come to that for something to be done, peoples lives seem to be just pawns in the ridiculous game that judges and lawyers play.

Fuck putting him away. Cunts like that are just plain useless. Pharmac should use him for medical experiments, or just harvest him for organ donations. Thats the only way he'll ever be of any use to anyone.

Off to the organ banks for exceeding the speed limit? I think Larry Niven actually wrote a few stories around that concept IIRC.

He did. And even jaywalking carried the death penalty as the rich and powerful (who lived hundreds of years due to organ transplants) had a constant need for fresh organs to replace those that wore out.

On account of those stories, laws were passed in the USA that stated no one can be forced to donate any part of their body for harvesting (including blood) - it occurred to them that ever since accurate blood typing the possibility was there that condemned criminals could have faced death by exsanguination to "repay" society for their crimes with their own blood. The idea scared them enough that they passed the laws to stop (make it more difficult for?) a future government to institute an organ harvesting program from the bodies of condemned criminals - thus preventing Niven's dystopia.

    But back on track:

New 'world class' women's prison opened

    4.00pm Thursday June 22, 2006

A new women's prison, described by the Government as a world class facility designed to help inmates turn their lives around, opened in Auckland today.

The National Party said it was an outrageous waste of money with each bed costing more than the average price of a house in the city.

Prime Minister Helen Clark opened the Auckland Region Women's Corrections Facility, and Corrections Minister Damien O'Connor said it would be highly effective in terms of safety, security and rehabilitation.

"This is New Zealand's first purpose-built prison for women and is a world-class facility," he said.

"It is not gold plated. It is a functional facility that has been carefully designed to provide state-of-the-art security while giving prisoners every opportunity to rehabilitate themselves with the aim of reducing re-offending."

National's law and order spokesman, Simon Power, said it represented irresponsible use of taxpayers' money.

"In April 2003 it was originally estimated to cost $58.4 million, but the latest figure we have from the department, as at April 2006, was for a cost of $158 million," he said.

"That is outrageous, and means each bed has cost the taxpayer an incredible $552,450. That compares with the median house price in Auckland of $400,000."

I can't stop thinking of the judges, who sentence these crimes, don't they have final word, we all no that a judge dos'nt say you are guilty or not, then why are they're so soft on it.
Bugger it shoot them well at least in the legs and work your way up, depending on the crime.
