I read in the paper last night that some schools have forbidden teachers to write anything negative about their pupils in the reports they take home to their parents.
Only nice comments are allowed.

There was an article on the radio on Saturday about playground design.
They interviewed some expert from America (not a slur on Merkens, just happened to be there) and she was talking about measures taken in some states.
Apparently more than one state has banned swings and seesaws from school grounds.
The interviewer mused as to where it will all end - will they ban running next?
The answer was that one state has banned running in the school playgrounds - Florida I think it was.

Dont laugh its happening here! You remeber the big forts made out of rough sawn wood and steel etc you used to see! Some were over two stories in height with fireman poles * elevated walkways etc all over some bark at most. I still never managed to break a bone!

Yup - I understand a number of public playgrounds have removed equipment because kids might get hurt, and they get sued.

It's nuts. Some of life's most important lessons are painful. Emotionally... and physicaly. That's WHY we have pain. It's the body's way of telling you not to do it again. It's a bloody good way to learn too.

The worst injuries i saw as a kid involved trees! Shit better get out the two person saw! (Chainsaws are dangerous and polluting you see) and get rid of all those nasty trees!

Close to where I lived as a kid there was what was probably the greatest adventure playground you can imagine. It had everything an adventurous kid could want. A river, trees, dam, busy railway line and best of all, uncapped mine shafts.. A typical day would be spent swinging across the river on a very dodgy rope and letting go half way, hoping you would make it to the other side. Next came a battle on the dam using rafts made from anything that floated roped together. The mine shafts were a great source of excitement. The deepest, about 300 feet had a 3 foot high wall around it to stop cattle falling down. Kids were expendable in those days. We used to sit on the wall and drop bricks, counting off the seconds before the splash. Other shafts were overgrown with blackberry, great traps for the unwary. Only the rich kids could enjoy putting pennies on the railway tracks. The rest of us spent them on ice blocks. All kids could climb in those days. A 60 ft high tree with a magpies nest at the top was no challenge. Climbing down with a couple of eggs in your mouth was. Had our parents known what we were up to no doubt the place would have been off limits, not that it would have stopped us There was of course a price to pay. Two kids drowned and one killed falling from a tree over a period of about 5 years. Unacceptable now but shrugged off in those days. The mine shaft and dam are gone now and the rail tracks ripped up but no doubt kids will still be finding ways to risk their lives, it's part and parcel of growing up.The cotton wool brigade can only legislate in a controlled environment. The rest of the world belongs to the young.

In regards to the report thing... we are not allowed to write things about their behaviour apparently unless we have hard evidence to prove it... so no longer will reports say that Jimmy is disruptive in class

Running in schools... some don't allow them to run around corners but children are always told the reasons for these rules

I do think banning paper planes is a bit ridiculous as it will so easily stunt their creativity... choosing the right design... angles... force... these teachers should have used this context and turned it into a learning experience.
