That's antibiotics. A vaccination allows the immune system 'recognition' of a viruse. Antibodies are produced as a result of the the vaccine so when a full blown virus 'attack' occurs the appropiate arsanal from the immune system can be deployed so as to defeat the virus.Originally Posted by Jim2

I've never had a flu vaccine despite working in hospitals, rest homes and schools - breeding grounds for germies extraordinaire, all of them. I get offered a free flu jab every year but only the staff who get the jabs get the flu. Me, being a smoker and supposedly more likely to fall victim to the lurg, I've had the flu twice in my life, once at 7 and again at 23. Been flu free for 20 + years - must be from strong stock or summat....

Err not quite. Antibiotics are for treating bacterial infections. Viruses are a completely different kettle of fish. They use your cells to reproduce and are capable of rapidly mutating in response to an immune system defense. They fool your immune system into making an infection response so they can utilise the extra energy you put into fighting infection to reproduce even faster. In the meantime you are open to secondary bacterial infections.Originally Posted by Skyryder

The flu vaccine is an attempt to teach your immune system to recognise the virus. It can make you open to secondary bacterial infections, but viruses cannot be treated with anitbiotics, only the secondary infections that can result from the flu.

I know of 3 people that don't get the flu all are women, the beggs the question why some people get it and others don't, as you say could be good breeding the key to it all.Originally Posted by yungatart
Thanks for that, I don't remember ever having been accused of "good breeding" before..LOL, hope you are feeling better soon

Thanks, its a lovely day would like to get out on the bike but don't want to chance it
I seldom get the flu - but I sure got it this time! Maybe mowing the lawns in the rain last sunday was not a good idea after all. While I was still out there doing the edges the wife came home after a weekend in Auckland, and nearly fell out of the car, went straight bed and stayed there for 3 days.
My worst night was friday night with the cough that never stops - my boys have it too,and they cough until they vomit.I was very improved on saturday, but still sore all over and coughing.Today I'm much better and on the mend....but I'll stay inside and take it easy. It's been a tough few days, specialy as my boys have it too,the younger really bad.We had a lot of people around last night, and my daughter is down for the weekend....so some good things to keep my mind off it.No bikes though - I was supposed to ride in a trial today, and thought I might go up to watch and be a dogs body...but discression voted an inside day, although it was nice in the sun this morning with the frost still on the ground.
I've yet to see it myself. However, you can still get a bad cold, and claim to have "the flu". It's fairly common for people who have a cold to think they have the flu. It's not until you get the real thing that you realise the difference.......Originally Posted by yungatart
And to bury another myth - no you can't get the flu from getting the jab.

Perhaps not but I'm having a bit of a rethink on this.Originally Posted by Virago

ps - don't ride the bike if you have the real flu. Motor skills, concentration and co-ordination are usually impaired....
That it is...got a sore head, blocked nose & 'nasty' cough....*must be the flu*Originally Posted by Virago
I laugh at people like that. Had the flu only once in my life, somewhere around 1982/3 - everything hurt, was off work for 12 days, lost nearly 10 kilos and wasn't really 'right' for about 3 months. That's the flu.
Do you realise how many holes there could be if people would just take the time to take the dirt out of them?
About 5 or 6 years ago I had my first (and last) ever flu jab... about 6 days later I was in Hospital with pneumonia, ive never been so crook in my life!
Now I cook dinner with at least 3 or 4 bits of garlic and have managed to avoid the flu so far, just wish I could get rid of the sinusitis now!![]()

Yeah,it pisses me off when people say they've got the flu, when all it is,is a bad cold,it must sound better when they ring in sick.I've had the flu about 3 times in my life, you sure know you've got more than a cold! Every muscle, bone and joint in my body hurts, and it feels like someone has gone over my skin with sandpaper. On saturday morning my youngest boy was crying because his knees hurt,it was kind of a worry - but one of his sisters used to have the same thing...she was down for the weekend and was able to care for him, knowing his problem first hand.He had no other pains at all. Then at one stage I was getting shooting pains in my knees, only for a couple of seconds at a time, but quite painfull. If it was all concentrated in his knees the poor little bugger must of been in pain alright.
Been in hospital twice with the flu in the last 6 months, both times on top of tonsilitis. I had an influenza variant 6 times in the second half of last year. Each time was 4-7 days off work. Cost me a lot of money.
You can't do anything. Would go to the loo and stay there for a couple of hours because I couldn't get up. Pins and needles were a bastard.
Like Str8jacket, the only time I've had a flu jab I ended up in hospital with pneumonia.
6 of one, half a dozen of the other, as far as I'm concerned.
