Last weekend on an attempt to do a ride with a couple of other KBers the CX last Saturday decided to throw a hissy fit. Turns out it was a bit low on coolent as a top up with plain tap water and a scoot around Pahongina Valley and some back gravel roads showed no sign of the previous days problem.
Finaly got around to start cleaning out the coolant system on the CX today. Took the radiator cap off and noticed some scum around the radiator cap spring. Turns out there was a heap of this crap in the catch tank and it looks like it blocked the tube between the tank and radiator. A good flush, with water with the garden hose on full bore, evacuated quite a bit of the crap from the catch tank. The funny thing is this "scum" has the consistancy a plastic grocery bag and is primer grey in colour.
I have no idea how long it's been like that but now the water flows freely through the tube as it should and no crap in the catch tank is flowing out the topup hole either which is a good sign.
I'll get some coolant system flush tomorrow and let it do it's thing as per the manual.Been a while since I've had a m/c with water cooling so am relearning a few bits 'n bobs. I've cleaned the moths, bees etc. from the radiator.
Gave it a good flush engine flush, then flushed that out with clean water as per the "good book". Relocated the clutch cable while things where in bits. Then replenished with fresh 50/50 coolant mix as recommened, which I'll replace again at the next oil/filter change. Also noted there was no rubber seal on the plastic drain plug so russled up an o'ring that'll do the job from my gasket draw-20 years of leftover seals I haven't found a use for yet....
