Nice Sarge, linking to the SUN is like giving some credit to The Truth, or whatever that shite rag is. (not the Herald for a change!)

As for the story itself, it's fuck all to do with football and just the anti-english sentiment that is rife in Scotland (coupled with more pissed tramps roaming the streets than there are Asians on Queen St.)

Many (most?) games seem to comprise 90 minutes of aimlessly kicking the ball around only to be decided by one or two pieces of luck (for the winning team) verses one or two pieces of back luck (for the losing team).

And I believe there is a clear double standard when it comes to the foul rule. Free kicks seem to be dished out habitually for the most minor confrontations and incidents when committed in the general field of play but rarely for the same or even major incidents in the penalty area. I suspect this is because if they were, the game would consist of nothing more than a series of penalty shots, and the referee would have even more influence on the outcome than he does now.

I'm actually a sports nut - any sports - but soccer just frustrates me. Why is it so popular?
I feel the same way about rugby, however, having played both games, and made an attempt to understand the rules of rugby and its very subtle tactics, I still think its rather boring most of the time. However, this may have something to do with the fact that its thrashed to death on the tv every 5 seconds. I cant see the point in watching a game when everyone knows the all-blacks will always win it, and 3rd rate nations will have any good players taken by the 1st rate countries.

Did you know that the most expensive defender is football was recently brought for approx nz$100m - that would, I suspect purchase the all-blacks for several decades - it would probably purchase all of the rugby teams that will play in the rugby world cup.

The game is popular because anyone can play it. Its also way more difficult that rugby ever will be.

Each team should have to keep playing for endless extra time until a winning score is achieved.
The fittest and best skilled team would then be the winner. The spectators win as well with more value for their $$'s.
What a load of tripe, they should obviously just keep playing until one of them catches the Golden Snitch.

At least I can understand soccer - thugby just seems to be about either running or diving over the line - not a lot of skill from where I stand.
Yes, I am pedantic about spelling and grammar so get used to it!

As someone who has spent the last 5 seasons coaching college girls 1st 15 rugby I can assure you none of those players fit either yours or Jims descriptions! Many were high acheivers and are now doing well at university level.
I played for years and have been involved with coaching males and females at many levels. The good thing about rugby is it can accomodate different shapes and sizes. Tall skinny locks, solid built props, midget halfbacks, leggy wingers and everything inbetween - all pulling together in a team sport. I can tell many stories how young "less-than-perfect-shape" teens were able to contribute in a team enviroment, getting fit, building self esteem, and getting new respect from their peers - not to mention burning off a few excessive hormones!
Sure there is a small percentage of dickheads in rugby, as there is in any group of people, even bikers.
