yeah but problem is I have a crappy monitor...which I use for both the PC and the 9 year old G3 mac I still use (which by the way runs OSX well and all the CS suite as well)....wonderful how even very old mac technology can run the lastest software. Ok so it does have lots ram, but still.

I went looking yesterday for a replacement for the PC and the old mac (which altho running, is prob due for retirement, shes been a good old girl)...
Think I have decided on the iMac 20inch intel chippie thingy, at $3500 (incl extra Ram) its pretty good. The Macbook pro at $6000 is just too pricy, and dont really like the screen that much. Working with graphics, gotta have a good screen. Will even get a video capture device for free at the moment thru Magnummac chch... that WAS the only reason i was keeping the PC
SOOOO cant wait to toss that bloody thing

I find myself tempted too.
And then I think, apart from a minor web site access problems - everthing is still working fine on OS9.2 and my 450mhz G4.

The 6 year old 21" Philips montor is starting to fail however.

I think I might get one of the dell wide screens and upgrade the OS for $1500 in lieu of the iMac. But damn it's funky that wide white box eh?

And a video capture device you say? Wonder if logical solutions can match it.

I'm very happy with my latest setup. G5 2Ghz DualCore, 3.5GB RAM, OS10.4.7, Creative Studio2, 23 inch Apple Cinema Display, all completely colour calibrated to our prepress house of course.

Having any issues with 10.4.7? Guess you're not running any RIPs or FreeHand...

remember that intel macs don't have classic support - so you CANT run OS9 apps on them.
if you are looking to a new nmachine and need OS9, a G5 is your only option.
and G5s are getting scarce....

oh, i'm told there is a 3rd party app called "sheepshaver" that will allow intels to run OS9.

10.4.7 seemed to fix a lot of the problems I had in 10.4.6.

The biggie we got with 10.4.6 was Apple's reworking of the AFS protocol.

For those who don't know, Apple's File Sharing Protocol was changed in 10.4.6. Previously, there was 199 characters allocated to the MacOs9 filename in the protocol. Apple changed it without warning to 128 characters. This caused us problems in CS2 with saving, reading and packaging files, as the application asked for the OS9 name, was fed 199 characters to fit in a 128 character memory buffer, went into buffer overflow and the OS quite naturally (well not if you use a PC) refused to allow the application to do it, and quit the application.

The problem is posted on Adobe's Techdocs server - live feed here and the solution was replace the AppleShare frameworks and kexts with the ones from 10.4.5

Anyway, 10.4.7 solved that.

As for Freehand Skunk - you should know we still use it - I'm sending you enough work!

Our biggie has been printing from Freehand. Tracked down to FontExplorer's inability to clear font cache files properly. Using Suitcase Fusion has solved that.

As for the other Freehand stuff, like the type doing weird stuff sometimes, the guides which you can turn off, but not back on again, and other "interesting" stuff, well, that's always been the way with Freehand.

We're moving over to Illustrator CS2 for all that stuff - so expect more of that lovely Telecom work with mega transparencies in the future Skunk.

I do like the screen on the iMac, almost as good as the widescreen ones at work.

The TV/Video capture device is called EyeTV and has different ones depending on how much you wanna spend I think.

ahhh the joys of being able to choose whether I update the sys software... still on 10.3XXX here, and glad to be so by the sounds of some of the issues.

No issues with Freehand with 10.3.9 at all. No font issues either when matched to Font Agent Pro using Libraries. You just don't get any. Period.

no issues here either, and use it for most of our work...very fiddley stuff we do here, extremely technical and no other software even comes close to being able to do it. As much as I love Indesign for my Gd stuff, it just doesn't cut it for work...and as for Quark errr well less said about THAT the better.

I use both.
I like freehand better for technical drawing and illustrator when I want a more natural 'hand drawn' look or have to deal with a lot of type.

funnily enough the only computers i've had crashing on me for no reason were macs
