Over 10 years ago I was a deckhand on a commercial fishing vessel. Even back then if you replied on the Metservice, you'd be up shit creek without any paddle. Someone who can read a weather map should have a good idea whats going on. We got them via weather fax out at sea. The metservice relies on modern technology, sadly though, it would appear that they are computer illiterate. Back in the days that NZ light houses where manned there was I think from memory, about a 80% chance of them getting the weather correct. However the light houses are all now unmanned and automated. Tis a pity they cannot correctly read a weather map, maybe they should spend some time out at sea, where your life depends on getting the weather forecast correct...

Bloody fact, the weatherforcast WAS more accurate when we had those guys on lighthouses years ago. and as 'inline' says, if your life depends on it, you make dam sure its right. A lot of the fishermen and farmers i grew up with were amazingly accurate, they all had different signs etc, low cloud on a hill was rain for 3 days, right down to wax-eyes coming out in the open usually meant snow. Electronics is supposed to make our life easier?, could have fooled me.

The rain radar for upper north island has been down since last night when I checked it on metvu and metservice.. nothing availiable so something has hit the fan as it's still borked.. lovely.
Metvu gets its radar from metservice.

Note the: Auckland rain radar images are funded by the NZ Govt. Funny that, musta bought some new tazers with stalkers and hawks built in or something so they can't afford the radar anymore.
