Update on my old shitter. Stanko is lending me some NZ250 17" wheels. Got most of the bits required to fit them now, just need to find some slicks (and some riding ability wouldn't go amiss either). We also chucked a flatslide carb on- went from not being able to pull top gear at the last round to pulling it up a hill. So with a bit of luck she should be a much improved shitter!

So where did you find a 24mm flatside carb Tonyb?Originally Posted by TonyB

The intake port from the carb to the rotary valve is 24mm. It's also not straight and about 30 or 40mm deep. So despite having a 28mm carb, the engine has to breath through a 24mm, slightly kinked hole at least 30mm deep. So as far as El Presedente and I are concerned, this makes the carb legal. In fact I reckon I'd be better off with a proper 24mm, cause the airflow will be slower through the 28mm, then it hits a sudden step from 28mm to 24mm, which can't be good for performance. Thinking about it, when the air hits the 24mm bit, it will speed up thus dropping the air pressure and causing some of the fuel to condense.
So why did I use the 28mm flatslide? Cause its the only carb bigger than the old 22mm which fits into the rubber spigot without needing to be modified in some way. Its a tight fit, but it does fit, and the first jet we tried worked perfectly.
So in short it was easy, painless and still within the rules. I really don't think its likely, but if it ends up being faster than everyone elses, then I guess we'll need to rethink things to slow it down a bit. The riders 'talent' and the bikes handling pretty much guarantee that it won't be anywhere near the front anyway.
The problem I have at the moment is that it's too fast to be back with the one or two unmodifieds, but too slow to be remotely near the front. Last year I could race with 3 or 4 bikes at a time. I figured I was on the right track so I enlisted Stanko to help me cure the death wobbles. This year I turn up at the track to find that either I'm slower or everyone else is faster. I can't race it as a stock bike anymore, so my only option is to find more speed.

Well you're both wrong then, and neither you nor El Presedente make the rules MNZ do!Originally Posted by TonyB
not really, if it is 28mm then it's not even close in factOriginally Posted by TonyB
Rule 24.2.4, F4 two stroke engines over104cc are restricted to carburation equivalent to a single 24mm carburettor
nothing to do with inlet tract size, it is all to do with carb size
Re-he-heeeeeeeeeally? Tell me, since it can't suck anymore air than what it will through a 24mm carb, whats the difference? Am I not right in thinking that there is a 125cc 2 stroke bike in Chch that is using not only a carb bigger than 24mm, but a competition piston as well? My understanding is that the bike in question has a restrictor on the carb.

Its off a RG250 Tony.Originally Posted by TonyB
I dont give a rats arse if its legal or not, would be a different story if Tony was leading the feild but even if he was to biff a 650 Holly on the bike its still not going to be any faster.
We all have our wee 'go a bit faster bits' I have a worked engine, kick has a modern bike, diesel has the balls of a elephant, hell the GP100LC has a 36mm carb... DC has a race proven frame...yes all liget but so what, actually the bike I'd query is DC's its now a 125 and has a carb bigger than a 24mm... once again so what if you were to put a Solex carb on it he'd still lead the pack.

I firmly believe in following the rules. If my carb is illegal I'll either have to decrease the venturi size some how (bog??, kneadit???) or turn down the spigot of the VM24SS carb I've got. However I can't see how it can be illegal, if I put a 24mm carb on it, it will still get the same lungful of air each time, cause the limiting factor is the inlet tract.
Or I could track down a 100cc head and barrell, and tune the living fuck out of it...Hell pistons are cheap for me, I could go through one every couple of rounds...

OK so it looks like we may have opened the family size can of worms here.
