Nice idea but it ain't that easy. Imagine Hitler was put in a room with Neville Chamberlain. Hitler wins, all the Jews, gypsys and non-Aryans in Europe get slaughtered over the next 25 years. Not exactly win-win.Originally Posted by placidfemme
Maybe, but the UN is funded by the likes of you and me. While the North Korean leadership are spending money on missiles, their people are starving to death. And who is helping them out? The UN, along with assorted aid agencies including considerable American support.Originally Posted by Swoop

Nope. Its the Japanese, the Russians, the Phillipinos, the South Koreans, and the Taiwanese are afraid. Even the Chinese are nervous.Originally Posted by placidfemme

Think of it this way. A teenager lives down the street from you. Instead of working he's on a benefit and doing drugs - which your taxes pay for. He gets a shotgun off Trademe, and starts firing random shots into the street. He is paranoid and scared of the local street kids, and wants to show them he can defend himself - and that he is one tough dude.
You'd be fine with that?
We have a real double standard when arguing about the actions of nations. On the one hand the liberal view is not to actively interfere when people are being persecuted/killed etc. None of our business.
Yet on the other hand when twin babies are killed, we are up in arms. Why wasn't something done etc etc. Aren't murdered babies in Iraq/North Korea/Sudan just as important?

Nothing to really worry about if you ask me, apart from the fact that the US, in particular, is biting. Ignore this stupid regime and they'll fade back into obscurity up their own arse holes.
The biggest mistake the region and the wider world could make is to react in face of these dicks letting off a few fire-crackers IMO. It's simply a pathetic attempt to make the world believe that N.Korea is important on the world stage and are a force to reckoned with. Which is hilarious. In reality it's a failed society built upon fear, and run by a misfit. Oh, and they've got an unstable stock of alleged weapons grade nuclear material, but claim they're a nuclear weapon nation. Yeah right.
Most countries with any kind of military capability in the developed world (with the possible exception of NZ alone) could whoop their arses.
Idiots. But I don't believe even they would be stupid enough to undertake any aggresive military action against their neighbours. They know, deep down, that they're pathetic.

Well, if you are not concerned about hungry commies with some nuclear warheads and intercontinental delivery vehicles, consider hungry commies selling those missiles to jihadis.Originally Posted by marty

that first line needs to be read in conjuction with the next one.
no-one seems to have picked upon the irony of it all yet.
Just saw a piece on one news.... the top dog of NK is a nut job...
Allow me to reiterate. I don't think NKorans have an intention to use their nukes. That's bad business. They'd rather sell it to jihadis who will use them without slightest hesitation. That's good business.Originally Posted by placidfemme

Kim Jong Il: Hans Brix? Oh no! Oh, herro. Great to see you again, Hans!
Hans Blix: Mr. Il, I was supposed to be allowed to inspect your palace today, but your guards won't let me enter certain areas.
Kim Jong Il: Hans, Hans, Hans! We've been frew this a dozen times. I don't have any weapons of mass destwuction, OK Hans?
Hans Blix: Then let me look around, so I can ease the UN's collective mind. I'm sorry, but the UN must be firm with you. Let me in, or else.
Kim Jong Il: Or else what?
Hans Blix: Or else we will be very angry with you... and we will write you a letter, telling you how angry we are.

Correct on the assumption about NZ being incapable (militarily) though...

also there will be some political underlying factors here US v China
China has the largest trade surplus with the US, "one by the way" that the US will never be able to repay, and its getting bigger day by day, bit by bit chinese are taking over amercian companies ie IBM (personal computers division) Maytag etc.. the list continues) as part of their debt/interest repayment .as mentioned they (US)will never be able to repay this,,, unless ofcourse......... guess what,!!!!!! they start " A WAR"
the only way to wipe a debt!!!!
Some missile crisis. When I was a kid, we had a REAL missile crisis.
