    Ahhhh... broadband

I love the smell of fat pipes in the morning.

Just got my home ADSL connection going and I can definitely recommend it as an improvement on the dialup experience. Hoooooo, yuss. Now the only times of the day when I am not a few mouse-clicks away from high-speed online access will be during my commute.

    $40 a month for 256kbps isn't too bad, either.

What connection flavours are you guys using, then?

Have had Jetstream for almost a year now and on the few occasions I've had to use dial-up again I've found it very frustrating. My son installed the ADSL and a router for 4 computers, as well as all the software and I have no idea how it all works so if anything goes wrong and he's not there I'm stuck. (But guess who got the glamour job of crawling under the house to run the cables??!!)

I'm on cable at home, 2Mb download which mean you can suck down 1Mb every 4 seconds at top speed. It's about $50/month.

We've got a very fast connection at work (was a microwave link, but is now running over copper) where I do almost all my interwebbing, but at home we've had ADSL for yonks. We've swapped ISPs a few times, due to data caps etc., and we're currently with ihug. Pretty good, but the "broadband" we get here is slow and overpriced c.f. the rest of the world.

One day we'll have real broadband and competitive pricing....
    ... and that's what I think.

    Or summat.

    Or maybe not...

    Dunno really....

... which is precisely why I bought an ADSL router that also works as an 802.11g base station. Wireless networking is your friend

I'm kinda in the same boat as you. My brother got an adsl modem, and since he's the computer techie person in my family, he's got the modem and gateway box in his room, and my computer and the family computer (when it was working... another story) are connected through a network.
We recently upgraded to a 256kb connection and it is soo coool

802.11g means nothing to me, but wireless networking sounds like a good idea. I wonder why my son didn't suggest it...

Maybe he's like my son (electronic/computer genius that he is) - for technical reasons, like reliability or summat.
(That and the fact he got the router and other hardware for free...)

Yeah I know what you mean. I used to have 10mbit but now I just have 128k jetstart, still good enough. But when I go home in the holidays etc I can't handle dialup, damn is it slow.

Welcome to the interweb thingy JR, glad you could join us.
    Wats dial-up ?

    FYI
Your 256 (upstream I think, and 128 DS) is not really broadband.
that speed, or lack of speed, is not classed as broadband.
You and I are being ripped by telescum. And now that the local loop isnt being unbundled, it wont get any better in the near future.

I only pay $25 a month for jetstream.

    Wireless = NO
Maybe when its better, no good for games.
FINE. This is the word women use to end an argument when they are right and you need to shut up.

I know. It's still a helluva lot better than dialup, but yes, I can feel myself being ripped off.

Indeed. I'm not a regular gamer, but the latency problems were a primary reason for not using wireless.
