At 11:53pm 11/07/06 Sophia Reiko Brown was born at Christchurch womens. Mother and baby are both fine, although it was a bit touch and go for a while.
We were expecting her on the 5th or 6th but due to a couple of Ovarian Dermoids we were booked in for a c-section two weeks ago. Upon arriving at the hospital my wife was checked and it was announced we could progress with a natural birth, which made my wife very happy.
Due date passes and nothing happening, no surprises there. Finally on Monday contractions started and we headed off to hospital on Tuesday morning, only to be turned artound again. By 4pm nothing much had happened so we headed off to hospital again as they asked that we come back in.
After 4hrs on a drip to speed up the contractions the staff notice that my wife is running a temperature of 39c and our baby's heartbeat is 170pm, should be closer to 130. Fearing infection in my wife, and the stress on the baby a decision is made to procede with a c-section. I was allowed in the operating room, very scary watching your wife get cut open with people everywhere, bells and alarms going off.
And so it was at 11:53pm my daughter was born, 3.08kg, a head of black hair and her mothers eyes. She is cleaned off, checked over and we're allowed to hold her for a few minutes before they take her off to ICU. The surgeons carry on operating on my wife until 1am, during which I'm taken up to ICU to see our daughter. Fearing the worst I'm greeted by a content, beautiful, georgeous baby, eyes wide open and looking at me. I stroke her skin, let her grab my finger and kiss her gently. The specialists tell me she's out of danger and after a few tests will move onto the maternity ward.
Just got home now after buying some cigars, about to light one of them bad boys up and celebrate my daughter's arrival, first grandchild for my in-laws and a half-sister for my 7yr old daughter. I don't care about anything else at the moment, I"M THE HAPPIEST MAN IN THE WORLD!!
