Here's a thought... I was born in France and raised here in NZ. When I was at school there was no thought given to 'catering' to people of French origins (or Canadian or Chinese or Phillipino....). Being geographically estranged from my culture, in order to be involved in it I had to actively seek out French books, films and interaction with other Francophiles.

Having said that, I never even had a detention at school much less be 'stood down' . I have no criminal convictions, have never asked for a benefit and pay my own way through hard work and dilligence.

Simply put, I turned out OK and retained a connection with my culture through my own efforts.

I fail to see why one particular ethnic group requires special treatment in order to perform at least as well as the general populace. 'Personal responsibility' is the key phrase which springs to mind.

Well put, I just love how this is portrayed as a systematic problem then they say this:
Reasons for schools taking action included assaults, arson, drugs, alcohol, sexual harassment, weapons and vandalism.
    RRIIIGGHHHT
So we should be surprised that kids are going to school and exhibiting the same actions and models as the parents. But this is a white mans system problem huh?
Hone Harawira says we should cater to this? Bullshit.
Maori should take responsibility for themselves and sharpen up. Put some bloody effort into making improvements in your family model, provide some assistance with all those millions from the settlements, stop advocating violence and abuse in the family, then we will see if the system is the problem.
IMHO the entire Harawira family should be shot or locked up permanently, bunch of lying loser scumbags. I have had personal experience of their crap and I would not trust them to even sit the right way on a toilet!
Rant completed, please return to your previous activity.

My understanding is that NZ schools MUST cater for Maori and be able to show that they are. Our local High School, with an approx 94% European descent student roll has to prove that they are catering to our Maori students eg Maori deans, powhiri etc to welcome new principal, a marae on the school grounds, links to maori community (that are noted in the school charter - no mention of links to European, Asian or any other culture). So what else is it EXACTLY that we are supposed to do??

Hardly surprising that Harawira is advocating for Maori when he's a member of the Maori party is it? Let democracy take its course, if enough people agree with him (highly unlikely i'd say) he'll get his way.

On a hypothetical side note, IF this were to help eliminate the typical Maori stereotype which gets banted around these parts frequently, would you be for or against Harawira's suggestions? (not suggesting the it would in reality, just IF it did)

we cater for those bastards too much more....and theyll be treating us like slaves...its where we are heading.
