    Question Car advice please

Sam and I are looking at buy a cheap run around cage (Like really cheap). But neither of us have ever owned a car before (I can't even drive )

Anyway... So looking on TurdMe in the "Under $2000" section they have a LOT of cars... some look like utter crap that could fall apart at any time, and others look semi decent.

For a shitter (Less than $2000) what kind of km's should I be looking at? Any tips of spotting the lemons?

Another problem we have is that if we decide to buy a certain cage, how can we go about getting it checked to make sure its not an utter dud?

If all else fails we will more than likely just buy bikes (pushbikes ) We're planning on heading to the UK next year (end of next year) so we just tought it logical to get our caging experience up incase we need to get a cage over there...

    Thanks in advance...

Buy a Corolla - they run for ever, use generic parts so are cheap and easy to maintain, and are pretty economical to run

My first car was a 1985 Toyota Corolla hatch. Sold it when I left Dunedin to someone I know and it is still running for them. I never had any hassle with it. It had 126,000 kms on it when I bought it and it was 13 years old then.

You can get cars checked by the AA, a mechanic you trust or a friend who's knowledgeable in that area.

If you can manage it, try and buy a Corolla around the 80s years. Find out if it is NZ new. They used to be built in NZ at the time and were galvanized to prevent rust.

I don't know a lot about cars, but I know of heaps of stories (I'm sure everyone does) about crap Jap imports. Cheap at first...

Anyway, good luck with the search!

don't know what a ford telstar even looks like... but what price range are you looking at?

We were thinking something like a civic, due to it being small and cheap and economical....

Thanks for the advice so far eeryone

Once you kinda narrow it down I'd suggest taking a look in places the others have stopped looking.

Turners car auctions are a good place, likewise trade and exchange newspaper, or if you belong to any groups (like Trademe) put the word out (as you have...) You might be surprised what comes out of the woodwork.

Yeah but the dog and lemon guide doesn't talk very nicely about my AU falcon. But 249,000kms and no problems... what can I say.

Buy a corolla Placid. Get it checked by Car inspection services or the AA and go from there. A comprehensive check could be the best 100 bucks you ever spent.

Congratulations on your Falcon. You were lucky.

    Try making a 1300cc engine last 300000km.

My Mitsubishi mirage 1500cc has 340000km and starts first pop. I know plently of Corollas doing 300000+ and Coronas pushing 400000.

kewl thanks everyone, I'll check the auctions.

I just feel... uncertain about car checking places...

At my old job an Indian girl I worked with went to a car fair, and got the car she wanted checked out by some inspection people that have a stand at the fair (an actual well established company... can't remember the name right now), they said the car was all good. She brought the car and picked it up the following Sunday from the seller.

Driving the car home and it died on the motorway, got it picked up and checked by AA and they said the car had a list of problems longer then her arm.

It took 2 months of small claims court cases to get the seller to take the car back and re-emburse her money.

So I don't wanna get ripped off (even if it is less than $2000)
