Maybe you need to drill some holes in the battery like Cibby did?

Does the laptop run at all ? if it does it won't be the cables fault ... unless the voltage/current from the adapter was too low I suppose...

Either of these fixed the problem.
... did you mean neither ?
Once the battery is charged can the laptop run from it ?
Is the correct battey level shown in the laptop ?

I would check all the cables/wiring between the power plug and the battery. Follow the path the power takes to the battery. I wouldn't be surprised if there was a second path that connects the battery almost directly to the power socket.

of course this requires a bit of time/dissection but its out of warranty isn't it

Make sure you have some reasonable jewellers screwdrivers (I got a great stanley set from DSE for $10-$15) http://www.dse.co.nz/cgi-bin/dse.sto...uct/View/T4381

service manual should be in here some where:

FFS. This is going to be my last post in here probably.

We have had computers blowing multiple mainboards because the power adaptor is fucked BUT STILL WORKING MOST OF THE TIME WITHIN TOLERANCES. THE POWER ADAPTOR BLOWS THE FUSES ON THE MAINBOARD DEPENDING ON HOW TWISTED THE WIRES AND HOW MUCH CURRENT GOES THROUGH THE COMPUTER WHEN IT IS PLUGGED IN, RESISTANCE CHANGES SO CURRENT DOES ALSO (DUE TO TWISTED/FRAYED WIRES IN PSU BUT IT STILL GOES). YOU REPLACE THE MAINBOARD THEN GIVE IT BACK AND IT COMES BACK SAME PROBLEM, LOOK AT THE POWER ADAPTOR AND IT HAS TWISTED/FRAYED WIRES. OR ELSE YOU HAVE A SHORTING PROBLEM UNDER THE MAINBOARD BUT THEY WOULD HAVE PICKED UP THE BURN MARKS ETC WITH SERVICING/REPLACEMENT.

IF YOUR BATTERY STILL WORKS IN OTHER COMPUTERS IT CAN BE DISCOUNTED, SAME WITH THE POWER SUPPLY (BUT WITHIN REASON APPLIED ABOVE). SO OTHER THAN THAT WHAT ELSE CAN CAUSE YOUR COMPTUER TO STOP POWER FLOW? FUSES ON THE MAINBOARD OR LOOSE CONNECTIONS, PICK ONE I'M GOING FUSES.

THE REASON ANOTHER PSU DOES NOT FIX THE PROBLEM IS THAT FUSES ARE ALREADY BLOWN BY THE USUAL ONE YOU WOULD HAVE PLUGGED IN FIRST TIME YOU GOT IT BACK. GET WHERE I AM COMING FROM? MAINBOARD #3 FOR YOU DEAR SIR.

"since this is what hp told them was the only part that as only thing to do with charging(or so they say)." THAT CONFIRMS MY ARGUEMENT. TAKE THIS TO THEM AND PRINT IT OUT OR SOMETHING. POWER SUPPLY IS WORKING BUT CAUSING THE MAINBOARD TO BLOW ITS FUSES.

On a different note, despite the manufacturer giving only a one year warranty you may still be covered. This is fact under the consumer guarantees act, that at a fair price (ie market price) a good should be expected to last a reasonable time (ie longer than one yr!). An appliance company got taken to task after a product (washing machine in this case) failed around 6 months after the one year warranty expired. It was deemed that the product was not up to spec as it should've lasted at least 5yrs, and the company had to repair the faulty product, despite the warranty being expired.
