Oh no no no. Sentences are normally concurrent which means they all run alongside each other. Ten lots of 3 years is still only 3 years maximum. Probably out in 22 months.

In this scumbuckets case, he was sentenced to 18 months from today. But since he is already in prison for the pistol (and whatever else), it seems that he'll actually be released in a month. Not sure why and the judge might have been unaware of that.

Cumulative sentences which follow on ie. 3 years, then another 3 years, then another 18 months etc are rare. They do happen, but three burglaries could mean being in prison longer than for manslaughter.

Unfortunately judges live on the moon and only beam down to do a hard 2 hours work, on infrequent days...

Judges and many of the lawyers are really playing a big part in shagging this country up. (Helen gives them permission of course)
Generalisation I know but very close to fact IMHO. John.

Not necessarily. They'd be clobbered if they made so much as a peep. He's too big, too strong and too intimidating when you are so much weaker. Shame and fear stops you from telling anyone, too. He certainly didn't look too worried or remorseful. I hope Victim Support can get (and keep) his family safe, though his wife may choose to go back to him. Another thread begun by Kitty, addressed the complex psychological issues of family violence.

Your understanding of the NZ legal and executive system is worse than Helen Clark's teeth. I doubt you'd know a 'fact' if it bit you.

Hell yeah - you wanna see some of the shit we had to design into the northern Women's prison. After you've seen the design specs (required design specs as defined by govt.) then you understand why it costs so much to keep them in the lap of luxury - oops I mean prison.

Helen clark and her merry band of communists are destroying our country with limpwristed sentencing, and it wont change till a decent far right party gets into power. National is entirely too centre of right to do what needs to be done, but sadly they are what passes for a major right wing party these days.

I say we use some old DNA to clone Maggie Thatcher & Rob Muldoon, harvest the sperm and eggs, and grow us some politicians with balls.

Your opinion is understandable and shared by many other people. The problem is that the news media only report a slice of the total information in any court case. That's fair enough, otherwise the papers would be full of case reports which no-one would read.

But reporters are under pressure today to spice up their writing. They are told to find an angle, to beat up a story. This leads to biased reporting with inconvienient facts being glossed over in favour of a dramatic tale.

As for judges and lawyers (and police and social workers) these people have a better view of the abysmal dregs of society than the rest of us. They see them everyday.

I seriously suggest that all of you find time to sit through a District Court list day to see what has to be dealt with. Best show in town - both sad and entertaining.

And I thought they were only concerned with presenting the unbiased facts for the public edification! (Tui moment...)

Utter fucking bollocks, old mate - we had limp-wristed sentencing while Muldoon was in power - and before that, too. Through all govts, National and Labour - judges have let killers off with fuck all over and over.

To blame the current govt for the fact that most the judges in this country are on the crims' side is ridiculous.

We have maximum sentences that are quite high in some cases (some could do with being made higher) there is the possibility of consecutive sentences and even preventative imprisonment. It is not the government's fault - either Helen's or Muldoon's (as much as I'd like to blame the moronic troglodyte for all the ills of the world) - that most the judges here lack the resolve to pass the maximum. We could get a National government in next week, we'd still have the same mentally weak retarded old fart judges on the benches passing the same milk-and-water sentences.

What do you want the govt to do about it? Increase the minimum sentence? Do that you'd find a lot more suspended sentences. "You killed him whilst you were drunk so I'm sentencing you to the minimum of 15 years - however, since you've never killed anyone the last six times you were drunk and caused an accident, I'll suspend the sentence..."

Sack all the judges except the one down south that made that drunk sell his house, put them in prison for theft (they have been accepting vast amounts of money to do a job that we can demonstrate they have not done so that's legally theft) and replace them with more judges who are prepared to give out proper sentences.

Unfortunately as a young fellow I had more than my share of opportunities to do this but I think it would have been very tame compared to today.
I have no intentions of ever going back for a refresher course as a participant. John.
