Restricted Licence Test??!!!??!!!

Hi there everyone!

This saturday i'm finally sitting my restricted licence!

Just wondering if anyone out there in k-biker society would have any helpful hints or tips that will be of interest to myself and any others who are at the same stage...

Mean, this is something I should really do too. Had my learners for about 9 years now haha.

Where is the cheapest place to get a L-Plate? or is there some nice person in Auckland that wants to lend me one?

Im naughty and dont ride with a L-Plate on my learners hehe Just praying I dont get pulled over or that seen as I have riden for so long they will be nice to me. Dreams are Free I realise!

Where is the cheapest place to get a L-Plate?

Go to the $2 shop.. they have them there...

Stopping - Place both feet on the ground, yes one foot at a time (if that is how you do it), but do place them both down, so that the instructor can see them both planted firmly on the ground. But you must wait, so that the bike isn't moving at all.
(Pretend that you are waiting on a car to go past even if there isnt one there)
If you have put the bike into 1st gear, then yes, keep your clutch in as you won't want to stall the bike. As it can be hard sometimes to get the bike into neutral.

Indicating - Make sure you do it and then turn them off. Especially at roundabouts when exiting them.
Also if the taking off place is in a parking lot, use indicators in there as well and exiting the parking lot.

Speed - Keep to the correct speed limit.

Lanes - Stay more to the middle of the lane, rather than to the far left or near the white line.

Lights - Stop even if they turn ORANGE and especially when they are RED.
They can fail you for failing to stop on a orange (depending on the tester)

Mirrors - Check them regularly - cos the tester may be in a car and indicating to you ahead of time.
Definitely move your head, so that it is obvious that you are checking your mirrors.

L Plate - Make sure it is on your bike BEFORE you go there.

Polite - Be damned polite to the tester when you greet him/her, but dont over do it thou.

License - Have it on you and also a ph bill or something like a ph bill with your home address on it.

Motorway - Stick to 70km and do not go over that speed limit should they ask you to go on the motorway.

Bike - Make sure it has a current Rego and current WOF on it. Also make sure everything is working and nought is hanging off it.

Following distances - Even when pulling up at intersections. Don't follow to closely and don't sit to close behind at intersections either.

Visors - If you have got a dark tint or iridium visor, it may pay to keep the visor up, whilst doing the test then at least at intersections and when stopped you can make eye contact, with the tester in the mirrors (as he/she will be looking).

Obstacles - Some testers after the test, may ask you about things, that were on the road or roadside, so be observant at all times.

Take off - Take a few deep breathes before you take off and have fun.


Good luck its a breeze and you will pass no sweat.

Footnote: If you think you have lost your tester, STOP and wait for him/her to catch up.
If you lose him/her completely, and he/she goes back to the start off point without you, it aint good.

So always keep the tester in your view.

Hey cheers guys for all the great tips and what not.
Well the test is late this morning, so I'm off right now to fit the all important 'L' plate to the beloved bike, and have another once over of the bike to make sure it is all 100% spik and span. I really don't want anything to get picked up.

Perhaps give it bit of a shine up won't go a miss.

And again thanks a big heap for the tips. The main thing seems to be a lot of suck eggs from what i've read above.

Yes!!
The test well really well.

Have already thrown away the dreaded "L PLATE" (bloody thing )


I took the yesterday mid day. Was raining and blowing a bit, What a nice day to have it!

But all in all the test it self was a whole lot of suck eggs really. As in what the chap above (crashe) said. However the main thing for me was to keep to the speed limit at all times. Not sure if i'm the only one like this but i fine it really hard to keep myself refrained from accealerating or boosting around the town.
Most likely not a good habbit to up hold if I want to keep my licence....

One of the biggest things for the test was navigation, as in the biker is also required to memorise a number of directions as in where to go and what not. However the tester (well the one I had at least) did mention that if i had any doubts as to where to go, said 'just pull over safely and wait for further directions.

Maybe a tip if you don't know the area too well, like I did, you could use one of those tank bags with a transparent top with a map of the area your going to be riding around. This is what i used, and it turned out to be rather use full, i got the tester to show me the route on the map just make sure (I wasn't going to take any chances of waisting my time and money!)

Yeah in hamilton i was given a turn left at the next intersection well before i even got there so navigation was'nt much of a prob

I started a thread here with some info...

Depending on age, if you're under 25, its 18 months, the course (to be done after 6 months on restricted license) knocks 6 months off.

If over 25+, its 6 months, course knocks 3 months off, can be done straightaway...

And as for that speed limit issue, try reading this:

Red-mist
Used to describe an aggressiveness not directed at anyone in particular, 'red-mist' frequently expresses itself in the urge to speed inappropriately. In extreme cases, it can lead to feelings of not caring or even a death wish and can lead to appalling lack of judgement.

If you ever feel it, pull over and regain control of yourself. Repeated red-mist periods are a sign you're unfit to ride and should seek medical help.

Race-face
The desire to race someone (or everyone) going in the same direction. A very dangerous emotion which can spark appalling lapses in judgement. If you feel it coming on, again stop and regain your composure. Breathe deeply. Remind yourself the sensation will pass quickly if you keep calm.
