Wellington Ride to Taupo 5th June

Righto boys and girls check out

    http://www.kiwibiker.co.nz/forums/sh...2&goto=newpost

How does everyone feel about a burlah to Taupo on Sat 5th and coming back on the 6th after a KB blat around the lake?

Taupo is a good central location for all KB members to meet up.

We've already planned to go up. Depending on what time you guys leave, we may join you. If the weather's crap we'll take the car (yeah, yeah, I know.....) I'm planning on leaving around 5.30am (WhiteTrash - I've suggested this later start specially for you).

If you're wanting to stay in Taupo on the Sat night you'll need to book accommodation PDQ - Taupo gets booked up really quickly. I've got my motel booked - we stay at Cutters, a couple of motels along from the corner, on the lakefront. It's not flash but it's reasonably priced and some of the units will sleep around 5-6 so it works out pretty cheap per head. And McDonalds and the McCafe is literally about 30 seconds walk away.

If the weather's really cold we'll take the car - Desert Road at 8am on a frosty winter's morning ain't no place for bikes (IMHO anyway). At 5.59am this morning the air temperature was minus 1.5 degrees at Hihitahi (the twisties with the flashing "ice" sign between Waiouru and Taihape).

And at the Makatote Viaduct, near National Park, the "ice" sign has been on all night, the road's gotten down to minus 1.5 degrees, air temp down to -1.

Don't tempt me! I know my own human frailties & I bet the books wouldn't even get opened!

I'm keen for the short group ride though Marknz - where would we meet? I'm in town.

do you mean enquire with the motel to see if they've got accomm for Fri night? Their phone number is 0800 CUTTERS (0800 288 8377) - why don't you give them a call directly. Tell them you're a bike racer and coming down for the racing. They've got heaps of parking room for trailers.

We won't be able to come up Fri night as Hamish doesn't finish work till 5.30pm and the traffic will be horrendous. Mind you, it is a thought.....that way I could have coffee/brekkie at the Taupo McCafe on the Sat mng...

Well sorry all. True to form it appears that I will now have to work over the weekend of 5/6th June and indeed everyday after for the next two to three weeks. Therefore I am unable to organise the ride up to Taupo. I hope that someone picks up the ball and there's a good wgtn showing for the racing.

    Cheers

    Yea good onya!

I'll take the lead, but I have to first admit to being a little hesitant after reading Lynda's scripture about the weather and the roads around those parts at this time of year. If I can get some learned advice from anyone as to whether or not a group ride up there is really a good idea or not that would be appreciated. If I then get a good muster, we'll go ahead with it.

    Cheers
    Mark
