Not much i can do about shipping line decisions,

my own fault really.
you don't need another bike, your taste over past 3 bikes as sucked, maybe when you get some tasty and get something better, might think about it
But over all dont' see maersk pulling out of either AKL or TGA, they will lose out to much business. which ever one they will pull out of.
To maersk how big a fish is NZ?Originally Posted by Cajun
Tauranga will go. It's only logs in and out of there anyway. Boxes will all go through Auckland or Wellington. No big loss for Maersk.

I disagree. Port of Auckland has significant infrastructure issues -- poor rail link, poor road link, limited space, channel draft issues. There have already been too many crap decisions made in New Zealand around containerised cargo -- like putting a container port at Lyttelton.Originally Posted by Colapop
And to answer an earlier question, the thing that sets New Zealand apart from most other countries is our reliance on refrigerated containers. They all leave here full and return empty. This means that specialist vessels are required to hump them to the other side of the world. This significantly limits competition, as a refrigerated container vessel costs a shitload to build and operate.
If Maersk says its not going to a particular port, it's not going there. End of story.

saslax - Maersk is the biggest shipping line in the world per say now. Our biggest exports is milk, or milk products. The advandge that Tauranga have over akl for this part, is the fontera packing shed in the wataiko is right beside train tracks, which those train tracks go straight to us, unlike akl, where they have to be loaded in to truck, and then carried in to the port, adding more trucks ont he road, more road ware and tear, and more traffic, in a city that is already traffic cloged.
Hmmmm you are very wrong Colapop. Logs are only a minor port of there business. There is all the petrol, that comes in the storage tanks here, as well as the massive amounts of kiwifruit that get taken over sea.
I work in the container terminal at the PoT.
If the container terminal was not here, the PoT shares would be be what they are. Wellington is the NI port which is next to useless.
The biggest problem with maersk at moment is they are calling at using AKL as a dumping port, and then using TGA as a load port.
The next thing is with AKL city counil now having ownership of PoAKL, Over all the land there is more valuable to them than the port return. and all the unslightly traffic(with trucks), and cranes and like spoiling there sea views. It will some time in future be scaled back, or moved somewhere else.
And thats where We come in, we have a rail hub to akl. to a inland terminal in AKL(which by passes the fonterra packing sheds), so end customers all have to do is drop a container at inland terminal in akl, or pick up from there.
Are you sure about that Hitch? (refridgerated containers?) In my experience a container ship carries cold boxes and std boxes as easily as each other. The only difference is the cold boxes are generally loaded on deck (mostly first or second teir) to allow easier access for cables connection.
These terms, cold box & std box) are colloquially used by stevedores - to appease the powers that be.
::edit:: I bow to your superior knowledge Cajun and withdraw me earlier assertion...

An because of america you cant go fishing off the port anymore as they have locked the thing down, will jsut go into the power station and fisk off the front of there now!!
I agree, PoAKL gonna have problems at some time in the future.Originally Posted by Hitcher
Most vessels, have reefer plugs in them, so can carry a mix of reefer containers, and dry containers. And hump them around world is not really needed, since most things are transhiped, eg containers get loaded in AUS, droped here, picked up few days later by another vessel to head to US, it happens alot, you have alot of major shipping hubs, the major asia one is singapore.Originally Posted by Hitcher
And ships are often loaded up with emptie containers where they have space, to take them to places needed.
Have ya been ther or seen pics of Singapore ports? Fark they've got a lot happening!!

I only been working in this industy for about 2 1/2 years, so don't know it all.Originally Posted by Colapop

Alot of these rumours are use by the shipping lines use to screw better deals at of the ports, so taken with a bit of grain old salt.
Cause at the end of line, they shipping line will go with where there major customers in region want to deal with, cause other wise that customer might take there business to another shipping line.
