That would be the first call, remove and clean all cable conections, clean all earth points then check how she goes. Still a problem? replace coils and then reg/rect. If that still doesn't work, put it in a paddock and shoot it. lol

Check the starter motor out , it may have the same starter motor as the XV,s had , that is a 2 brush starter which effectively means that the battery has to provide additional power to excite the field electro magnets. The four brush starters feature permanent magnets in the field coils which means the need for a lot less current. For twenty years I suffered with a starter problem on my XV , save as you describe , possibly worse , just hated going away on an overnight trip in case the bike would not start in the morning.I purchased a new 4 brush starter off ebay in USA for $128 plus $38 airmail postage. The bike starts first time every time now.The other thing to check is your fuel taps , the carbs may work on induction which means if the bike has been standing unused for anytime it may need primeing, check your taps to see if they have a primer position.Best of luck

postie Your bike is in essence a XJ600 -well engine wise it is anyhoo
mate toss a set of new plugs in her. Theyre only about $5 each
Make sure the battery is fully charged.
Snip 5mm from the end of all the plug leads at the cap end.
    I bet thatll fix her.

Starting wise its a lil trick.--Full choke -NO throttle -crank her up. ease the choke back to half after a minute.

Your a legend mate, worked a treat.
The plugs were wet so I just cleaned them, got a proper new battery as the one it came with was toast and the one i tried from my VFR was too small. Checked the HT leads, one was broken open so i just taped it nice and tight, not ideal but did the trick.
    Crank crank and she's away.
