    BEL 946 battery radar detector

Has anyone got one of these detectors and how well do they work. I know they won't be as sensitive as a wired system but are they good enough to give you enough warning in most day to day situations (not including riding at warp speed) ??? How long do the batteries last you? They reckon you can operate it in your pocket using a deflector clipped to your visor - this sounds a bit dickey to me compared to having it stuck on the screen (wouldn't your jacket stop some of the signal?).
Price wise they're pretty good - but only if they offer useful protection.

The only tests I've seen were of the Passport Solo - pretty crap really.
    Have you checked reviews?

Yeah I have checked the reviews and it agreed with your comment on the Passport Solo - they said the only one they would trust was this Bel 946. They didn't detail the range it had on Ka band. They also say it cuts out after a time if it hasn't picked up any signals - I think an hour, which could be a disaster on a long trip. They still read OK and there's someone selling them on Trademe for a buy now of $295 so IF they work OK they're a bargain compared to other options. I hoped someone with one could comment

The cutting out after an hour would stop me from getting one. Murphy's law says that the IRD will come along at an hour plus 5 mins.
