You know whats funny. No one has said anything about being SAS or SBS or and special forces so I would like to see where you get that from.

Besides, Dover is just stirring shit again....

Sorry, I just re-read what you wrote.

    Yup... and thats a fact...

The thing thats amuses me in threads like this is when people start to believe their own fictitious talk about themselves - dont know if its funny or pathetic.

Note how I quoted Indoo and not Dover (can never let people know I agree with him )

A .50cal is not guaranteed to stop a bear - no handgun is. And with proper placement (or blind luck) you could stop a bear with a lesser calibre (not as likely - you try "proper placement" when you've got a huge carnivore bearing down on you).

As impressive as the .50 is, I recall the .454 "Casull" is more powerful - originally a "wildcat" round (cut down and renecked rifle cartridge designed to be fired in custom made weapons) that went into commercial production. There are a lot of wildcat pistols out there firing rifle rounds or cut down rifle rounds. They're devastating but not guaranteed to stop anything.

Personally I'd go for a 9mm because you can buy a lot more 9mm ammo for your buck than any other calibre which means I can afford to practise a lot more than someone using a less common, more expensive cartridge. For the price of a magazineful of .50cal for the Desert Eagle I could buy a shitload of ex-military 9mm ammo and practise to my hearts content.

I wouldn't expect a 9mm to stop a deer, let alone a bear, but once I had built up my accuracy and speed practising with 9mm it wouldn't take a as much practise to get up to speed with a heavier calibre.

Can't afford any of that or the club fees etc, so I use .177cal... (not that I expect Dopey, errr, I mean Doc, to believe I own an air pistol, he probably thinks I only have a water pistol. Good for him, he's welcome to his own delusions)

I met someone on a range in Palmerston North a couple of years ago with a rifle like that. Damn good shot too. You?

It was pretty accurate for the type of gun it was, no where near as good as my Ruger M77 MII .223 but for a .308 semi-auto that was proberly 15years old or more it did the trick.
They were first brought in the country in the 80's(i think?), and used as chopper guns to shoot deer. Thats why mine had been stripped of its carry handle, open sights, flash suppressor, muzzle break and winter trigger.

The guy was consistantly putting rounds into a 2in box at 750m. At the time I was managing 3 out of 5 rounds into a 3inch at 750m. Hell of a shot and a nice rifle so if it was you, I'de like to buy you a beer sometime, the guy gave me some good tips that day.

Kind of unrelated but how come switchblades/butterfly knives are illegal?
I've owned one since I was 14 and never come to grief with it.
