    Finding my way about

I was wondering if someone could help me. I'm trying to find where various bits and pieces are near to where I'm going to be based (Ohakea). Now I know its near Palmerston North but thats about it. Can someone give me some good website addresses fro things like online roadmaps and estate agents. Also, and this is a bit left of centre for a biking forum but I'd realy like to know where the nearest places to surf are as ideally thats where I'd like to buy a house. Any help on local info would be more than welcome.

    Thanks

    www.smaps.co.nz is pretty good.
I let someone else tell you about surf beaches "nearby".

    Hi Lee

www.wises.co.nz is another map facility and you can even do route planning on it. With respect to real estate, try www.realenz.co.nz or http://www.open2view.com/search/.

    Cheers

    Cool

Foxton Beach and Himitangi Beach are just 30 minutes out of Palmerston North... Not sure if they are surf beaches (Been a long time since I last went there)
Raglan is world known for surfing.. (that is up north)
Pihia Beach is widely known for surfing.. but that is in West Auckland.

All these beaches are in the north island.

Surfchick is the one on here who knows where all the surfing beaches are...
So give her a PM (private message)

Thanks for all the links guys. Will have to spend some time going through them all. Have been looking at the Wanganui (?) area. Maybe its just my british bias but the houses seem really cheap. Is it a good area, nice town etc?

Wanganui is really cheap because the employment opportunities are limited. As you would be already employed, this will work in your favour. However, my wife has an Uncle who hasn't been able to sell his house for 5 years. It may be that he doesn't really want to.

There are really nice aspects to Wanganui, and some parts are downright depressing. Bit like Southampton. But without the giant port.

My sister lives in Wanganui and has been trying to sell her house for years. Some areas are quite nice but there are some that could be described as slums - like any town/city really.

What about Feilding? We have friends there and the house prices are pretty good. It would be about the same distance to Ohakea and you've got the bonus of having Manfeild (the race track) right on your doorstep. It has pubs, restaurants, supermarkets, etc and is only about 20kms from Palmerston North. Ohakea would be about 20-30kms from Feilding.

As for British bias, you'll find that houses ARE cheap compared to what you'd have to pay. We've got three acres in the country north of Levin (50kms south of Palmerston North) with a six year-old three bedroom house and five car garaging - and we paid $261,000 for it three years ago. My uncle used to live in Twickenham and his three bedoom apartment there sold for 186,000 POUNDS in about 1995. You'll most likely find that if you had property in the UK, what you sell it for will buy you a much larger and nicer home in NZ. Great eh?
Yes, I am pedantic about spelling and grammar so get used to it!
