Police run pilot scheme to test motorists’ vision

South Wales Police have carried out some of the first roadside eye tests in the UK as part of a new pilot scheme. There are concerns that many motorists are driving with poor sight which is leading to accidents, deaths and serious injuries.

Some 300 drivers were stopped for a two-minute check near Abergavenny, where they had to read four number plates at different distances. Officials said five would have failed the eyesight part of the driving test.

New drivers' sight is checked when they sit their test, but it does not need to be examined again until they are 70.

Inspector Glyn Fernquest of Gwent Police said: "Although driving without the required vision is an offence which can carry a fine of up to £1,000 and three penalty points, our aim in this survey is to gain a better understanding of the likely size of the problem, and to encourage regular vision checks."

After the scheme, the police will be still be trying to figure out why there are
no reductions in RTA's (road traffic accidents).

Maybe they are looking at the wrong causes? i.e.

Drunks - pot heads - pill heads - Myopics - uninsured elephant washers -
Boy racers - caravaners - Blah! Blah! Blah!

    Opthalmic police, whatever next.
In the beginning, there was nothing. Then the Lord said: "Let there be light"...
and there was still fuck all, but at least you could see it!....

So they have "lifetime licences" there? Unfortunately our gubbinment decided our population is able to be re-taxed (oops, re-tested) during our driving lifetime so as to make more money (oops again - roads more safer).

It is a good thing they don't do eye tests in Canterbury.

They would find that everyone there has only one eye

Yep - and if you are starting out with the bike license thingy here in NZ - you end up having 3 eye tests, one for each phase (Learner, Restricted, Full)
    Tax?? Never...
I used to be indecisive, but now I'm not so sure...

Shit - try Oz - no tests, but it costs ..um...$105 (I think) for 5 yrs licence or $35 for 1 year.+
