+ Magical Martin Dominates at Dundrod
Kirmington's Guy Martin produced quite simply a magical performance at Dundrod on Saturday, dominating the Ulster Grand Prix with no less than four victories from his five rides. The wins came in both of the Superbike and Supersport races and were the first International race victories in the 24-year olds career. The AIM Racing rider also claimed a win in Thursday's Dundrod 150 Superbike race and was the only man in contention for the Man of the Meeting accolade.
Practice got underway on Wednesday and Guy was on the pace immediately, eventually taking pole position in the Supersport and Superstock classes and second in the Superbike so it was clear he was going to be in contention for the race victories. With conditions, for once, perfect at Dundrod, he blitzed the opposition in Thursday's Dundrod 150 race and with a succession of 130mph+ laps he took the chequered flag by 3.4 seconds.
Overnight rain left the circuit damp for Saturday's Ulster Grand Prix, the final International road race of the year, and after leading in the initial stages of the Superstock race, Guy had to give best to Bruce Anstey although he was the only rider to stay with the pace of the flying Kiwi. For the rest of the day though, it was Guy's day. In the first Supersport race he led from start to finish despite the close attentions of Ian Hutchinson and his final winning margin was just 0.529 seconds.

It was even closer in the feature 8-lap Superbike race and after exchanging places with Ian Lougher in the first couple of laps, he established himself in the lead. A new outright lap record of 130.548mph gave him the upper hand but Raymond Porter closed right up and there was never more than half a second between the pair. Guy never gave him the opportunity to overtake though and on the run in to the line he prevailed by just 0.269seconds. The second Supersport race was a classic with just one second separating the top five at one stage and Guy had to work really hard for this win, after a unusually sluggish start left him fifth at the end of the first lap.
He soon fought his way to the front but it was only a final lap overtaking manoeuvre at Jordan's Cross that gave him the win and the margin between him and Ian Hutchinson was just 0.145seconds, the duo both demolishing the old lap record. The final Superbike race was cut short after just three laps due to rain but not before Guy had set a new personal best lap of 130.824mph although Hutchinson went 8 thousandths of a second quicker to re-claim the outright lap record at the fastest road race in the world. Nevertheless, it was Guy who took his fourth win of the day and in doing so he became only the second rider in the history of the event to achieve that feat, a truly brilliant performance.
Speaking immediately after the final race it was a somewhat stunned Guy that said:
"What happened there then? I'm at a bit of a loss to explain how I'm feeling at the moment and I think it's going to take a few days before it all sinks in, it's been an absolutely unbelievable day. Needless to say I'm absolutely over the moon and from having no International race wins I've now got four to my name and everything has gone perfectly."
"The weather was a bit iffy in the Superstock race but I rode hard at the beginning to see what I could do and led for the first couple of laps. When Bruce came by it was clear he was willing to push that little bit harder than me so I let him go and 2nd was a good start. The rest of the day is a bit of a blur to be honest but the first Superbike race was unbelievably hard and Raymond kept the pressure on all the way although he never actually attempted a pass."
"The Supersport races were really tough and I had to work so hard for those wins but the bikes were perfect, the tyres were 100% and although the course was never perfectly dry, I knew where the damp spots were so was able to plan accordingly. There's no doubt that the short circuit racing has sharpened me up and it's just been the perfect day. The team have been brilliant all week, working really hard, and I've got to thank them all for their support. I've had a bit of a mediocre season but a good day like today makes up for it and there'll be a few celebrations tonight!"
