THE Crocodile Hunter, Steve Irwin, is dead.

He was killed in a freak accident in Cairns, police sources said. It is understood he was killed by a sting-ray barb that went through his chest.

He was swimming off the Low Isles at Port Douglas filming an underwater documentary and that's when it occured.

Ambulance officers confirmed they attended a reef fatality this morning at Batt Reef off Port Douglas.

    sad news indeed.

RIP Steve, was so enthisiastic about the enviroment and understanding animals that would scare most people off. Sad news. He has a young daughter and son as well.

Love him or hate him there's nobody that can deny he was passionate about wildlife. Goodbye Mr Irwin, the environment will miss you.
They shall not grow old as we that are left grow old.
Age shall not weary them nor the years condemn.
At the going down of the sun and in the evening,
    we will remember them

    Confirmed on National Radio too.

Say what you will, my kids loved him and the stuff he did with the Wiggles.

    RIP Steve.

    That's really sad news

44 is no age at all. At least he died doing something he loved.

What next? Rolf Harris chokes on his felt pen lid?

I liked Steve Irwin, taunting wild animals has always been a passion of mine.

He died doing what he loved, better that then to grow old and watch the natural environment he loved and fought for being destroyed. He did good work.

He was sometimes annoying nevertheless he was a good, kind hearted guy who did a great deal for the animal kingdom... This is very sad news.
