Goodtime does a marvellous New York peppered steak pie that I can't resist. And today I had to do a feature on the Rongotea Four Square as it has an instore bakery. They gave me a butter chicken pie to try and I also bought a couple of steak and vege ones to take home for our lunch. The steak ones were very nice! Crisp pastry, big chunks of tender meat (which apparently play havoc with the oldies' teeth, which is why they also sell heaps of Irvines pies!) and carrot, brocolli and baby onions. Worth a stop in there if you are passing.

The butter chicken one was tasty - HEAPS of chicken and spicy sauce, but I still prefer my butter chicken with rice rather than encased in pastry.

Hmmmm. Rongotea sounds like a worthy destination for a "Pie Run" some time...

I dont know who actually made them, but the steak and cheese pies they used to sell at the kiosk thingy in the wellington railway station were the shit.

This was about 5-6 years ago now so they quite possibly have a different supplier, but the pies were so goddamn good.. I STILL crave them.. They had a distinct zing to them, some sort of spice/pepper I'd imagine but it tasted bloody good. Used to buy 2 every morning for breakfast when i was communting on the trains.

Mr Macs pies in Palmerston North used to be really good, they used to be in Ruahine st by the Hospital, then moved out near memorial park, on the rd to ashurst (I forget its name). I think they may have changed there name these days thou.

Trisha's pies in Kent Tce was a stable food for the month or two I worked at Atech when they were just over the rd. Have to second them being damn good pie.

Sadly I've yet to find any really good pie in Hamilton.. Its all just asian bakeries pumping out generic pies so far :-(

You're not wrong there - we stopped on our way to Auckland once and bought pies, sandwiches and cakes at an Asian bakery near the racecourse. The pastry was bright yellow and really chewy and the so-called chicken filling was gluggy and tasteless. As for the sandwiches, overchilled white bread and fillings with no discernable taste. Same goes for the cakes - although they had flavour, it just wasn't a nice one!

Sounds like a good plan, Hitcher, although they don't have anywhere you can sit and eat them so it would be a stand and chomp session! (Unless you rode back to our place and sat on the deck - they reheat very nicely in just a few minutes in the oven!)

I prefer home made pies, that way you know whats in them.

Not to keen on fingernails and sticking plasters in my pies.

On the contrary....the taste is vibrant yet subtle on the palate, leaving the most discerning customer wastefully satisfied.......
