got pulld over for passing some driver all over the road, the unmakred copper followed me for about 8 kms then when i parked my bike he trapped me in then came up behind me nd grabbed me, told me did i realise passing a car on the toherside of the road is reckless driving, i said no he said i'm looking at a $300 fine for doing 65km/h while passing him and an equally large fine and demerits for reckless driving, then he decided to give me a ticket for leaving my wallet and licence at home instead, weeeeeird
Speeding even when passing is illegal and a huge no no ... and doing it in front of a cop just gets you slammed ... my worry is that passing in itself is inherently quite legal unless there are lines to indicate that you shouldn't. If you passed without the appropriate distance in front of you at the end of the movement you can also get done but I think that area is fuzzy .. is it law or guidance you would have to check that out.
Problem is there are a huge number of variables in this situation that we don't know ... so bummer Alex ... hope the total isn't too bad![]()
Which makes you wonder when the law makers thought you might legally overtake, since how often do you come across someone going so slowly that you can overtake them safely (ie quickly) without speeding?
Correct me if I'm wrong, but (regardless of what they might be called) there are no "no overtaking" lines. Those double yellow lines are "no crossing over these" lines. My understanding is that you can still overtake provided you do not cross the lines (and provided it is safe blah blah).
And I've always wondered - does riding on or between the double yellow lines count as crossing over them?
You are correct about double-yellows being "do no cross these lines" I have that on very good authority (Head Police Highway Patrol guy) coz I asked about all the guys I see commuting on the coast road betweem Paraparaumu and Wellington who try and squeeze between the yellows and the cars.
I just think they're nuts. One guy on a cruiser has his wheels just touching the inside line but his bars, hands and feet are about a meter and a half over, right in the path of oncoming lumps of heavy metal. That road is not wide, the trucks in particular need all of the lane. It would be hard to comiserate with his mashed up leg when it happens.
Ahem...
Are we on topic here?

Yeah it was the single white lines and there were no cars coming, just didn't realise it was a cop or i wouldn't have done it, cop in an unmarked car, no lights even on the dash and not wearing a police uniform, i'm assuming the lack of lights is why he had to follow me for 10 minutes and then trap me in, rather freaked out tho when suddenly some car has trapped me in and then as i'm taking my helmet off a hand touches my shoulder and then suddenly a big overbearing man is standing behind me.
