    Need a Mechanic

We have a 1997 Nissan Elgrand Homy and it has a problem.

1.) It randomly cuts out or the tacometer jumps up and down as you are driving or idling in the drive way. The engine obviously does the same as the tacometer and rev's. White (and sometimes a darker, almost black) smoke billows out from the exhuast.

If you put the pedal to the metal it usually clears itself after a while and resumes its normal self.

Another mechanic suggested that it was an over fueling problem but couldn't be sure and said that the next time it plays up to bring it in.

Are there any mechanics on this site or do you know of any who can take the fucken thing and diagnose the problem and fix it.

2.) Don't know if it is related, however the front air conditioning randomly comes on as well. Even if it is turned off. I imagine it'd be exspensive to have it looked at as there is front and rear air conditioning that can be controlled by a remote.

where opinion holds more weight than fact.

It's better to not pass and know that you could have than to pass and find out that you can't. Wait for the straight.

Diesel I presume,or what I'm writing is a total waste of my time.

Is the tacho cutting in and out,or is it just fluctuating with the revs? If the tacho is cutting in and out and the motor cutting in and out I'd say look at the connector at the injector pump,a bad connection cutting both the fuel shut off solenoid and tacho - but I doubt it.

1997 - is this an electronic pump, fly by wire? Have a look at the injector pump,if it's got cables and levers and diaphrams and what not on top it's mechanical,if it just has a fuel hose and two wire plug then it's electronic. If it's electronic there is only one place in Auckland that can do them.Otherwise look for leaks,it could be sucking air....change the fuel filter and run your finger around inside the old one to look for gunge,or bug.

White smoke - it's cold, retarded,or has low compressions.

Black smoke - too much fuel or a lack of air, advanced timing,or injector pump.Do air and fuel filters first - enough air and clean fuel are vital to a diesel,so basics first.
