Get some decent Stylmartins, they're comfy, durable and I'm sure you know where to buy them.

Unfortunately being prepared to pay for safety does not guarantee quality products these days.

The touring style of boot with stitched/bonded soles are probably more robust than a race type but any decent boot that goes above the ankle is better than nothing...Carbon fibre is fairly tough but still got the treatment, better it than my ankle.

My only pair of SIDI's were bought in 1978...28 years later.........

Simple fix to that, don't buy boots that are a size too small.

I have a pair of Sidi Vetebras and I have not complaints with them. Had them for almost 2 years now and been through one low speed bin as well as a lot of normal walking in them - appear to be holding up fine apart from some general leather scuffing on the toe region.

If the boots are good in all other respects why not go get a high quality zippers put in them? Also, for a $500 pair of boots do they not have a velcro overlap that covers over the zipper?

id say in terms of a consumer product 2 years is prob the life of the product. we may not like it but thats the way it is! shop around, some products have lifetime waranty on them, like some mtb bike frames.
Can you not find a shoe repair place to put a new zip in?

When they were a year + old (and out of warranty) one of the zips broke.
I dropped them back to the shop I got them from (who shall remain nameless) and they returned them to the suppliers who fixed them and said "that if they broke again, to send them back for repair..no problem".

Skip forward to a year from then and zip NO.2 fails...so I send them back again, and I even say I will pay for any factory repairs required.

Different story now, "they are not interested in pursuing the matter any further" and its now up to me to get them fixed.

So I"m fine with that, I wouldn't have returned them in the first place if they had not said to.

Then I thought what would have happened if I had crashed and the zips had failed , leaving my feet exposed, is it fair to say just because they are 2 years old they are now useless and redundant (any new repairs not withstanding).

These are a $500 pair of boots to replace, I was hoping to get more life out of them then this...is that unreasonable?

The thing is I really like the boots in every other aspect and would have bought another pair.....but now, forget about it, its any other boots apart from SIDI in the future, and the new alpinestars look bloody good.

Is this just another example of our throw away culture???

Life is going to treat you rather badly if the only learning that you're able to do is from direct personal experience.

One of the reasons professional racers come out of crashes so well is the protection they wear, and I doubt you'd find them wearing anything but top of the line foot protection.

But then I read the bottom bit. And two words came to mind. Saftey noob. Ive crashed off road enough times to know that my feet are the last thing that get hurt, Not being a dick on the road I havnted had the experiance for tarseal but I think as long as the boot/shoe stays on your feet will be fine. Stop wasting 500 bucks on being a poser.

Its a crock that you pay $500 for boots that dont last 2 years. My work boots cost $140, they get THRASHED. Really thrashed. I put em on at 730 in the morning and wont take them off until its bed time, I wear them in the wet, I climb in them, ride my bike and generally give them a good work out 7 days a week. If they dont give me 18 months before they are stuffed I feel ripped.
Ive said this before but for Sidi to hit us for that much money for boots that generally dont work to hard for long enough, is a joke. Ive had the soles peel off after 3 months. This is BS. why do we keep buying this junk?

That's nothing like what you said. You implied that they didn't provide the protection that should be afforded by their price tag.

I'm guessing you dropped out of school? I mean, there must be some reason that you're so incredibly bad at articulating yourself.

It's all branding and merchandising really - Sidi are big in the cycling world but you can get shoes just as light and just as rigid as Sidi for half the price. Same is true in terms of motorbike kit.

I had a crash in a pair of sub $200 boots from Motomail. Toe box is now cracked and would offer no protection in the future but my foot is fine - these boots are no longer used but I'll keep them to show my sons why they should wear good boots on bikes at all times.

Sounds like the build quality is not up to the same standard as the materials or the design work...Italians are famous for this - great design, fabulous materials....final delivery....erm..(on cars and bikes this usually manifests itself in the electrics). Having said that I'm wearing a pair of Gaerne boots now - only had them a month so we'll see.
In space, no one can smell your fart.
