I am still working on that. i think stuff will bounce more on the DR650 than on the Transalp. I have a strap in the 45litre Box on that and last time i tryed tucking shit in with a towel. I also put a thin layer of foam rubber like half thickness bed roll around the inside of the box to maybe soften the knocks and scraping inside. My reading glasses are a laugh too, when i take them out of the box after a big trip all the screws usually have fallen out. The Djebel now has a 30 litre box (no straps in it but have lined it) so will carry on investigating what works for my load.

Nope, I'll be doing one or the other, with the 1st choice being the peninsula (blue sky dependant). I was just wondering how much time I had to dither on the day before making my mind up which ride to do. You guys go ahead and make your plans, and I'll just tag along - maybe.

Where's the rolly pub? My guess would be Main Rd just south of the BP?

That might have something to do with being a professional engineer. The project I have spent the last 2.5 years non stop working on (CRETS) is going out to public consultation on Monday with press releases on Wednesday. Been in the consultation frame of mind for too long I guess.

I can handle that. Was keen to not venture too far from home but what the hell.

FQ the pub is the one you are thinking of but may be unnecessary anyway.

I'm happy for you guys to come along, so long as you're aware that the primary reason for my ride is photo taking. I wont be going that quick, as I'll be looking around at the scenery for photo opportunities, will be stopping frequently, and spending a bit time at each location, possibly with a tripod, taking pics. I planned to be on the road around 9am, head up Dyers Pass, turn right at the sign of the kiwi and follow the Summit Rd to Gebbies Pass, getting some photos along the way, then down Gebbies Pass to the main Akaroa Rd and on to Little River. Then it’s onto the gravel roads for a poke around the south peninsula. When I’m done there, I’ll possibly come out via French Farm, back along the main rd via the Hill Top to Little River, then over the hill to Port Levy and back round the bays to home. It’ll be an all day ride, BYO food and so. I’ve attempted to do this ride a couple of times before, but the weather has been against me in the past – maybe this time.

So, a very different ride to the Selwyn River one. The Selwyn one will be good too, but I can’t do both. If you want to come along and can live with the slow pace and stopping, that’s cool, just so long as you know what I’m up to. I don’t wish to hijack this thread or ride, just telling you what I’m doing, but it seems to have turned into a long winded reason for why I may or may not go to the Selwyn. I’d hate to get told off for doing something un-notified like Lemans recently

Of course this may end up as another aborted attempt, in which case I’m keen on the Selwyn, although the forecast is looking good for it.

Consultation doesn't always work too well on here - too many people, too many opinions, never get anything done. Sometimes best to decide what you want to do and let everyone know, and they can come or not as they please. Compromise is nice, but doesn't always work.

Lemans only got told off because we thought he made up excuses saying he was too busy to ride with us then rode elsewhere on the same day as we did... but he didn't. He rode on a different day so that was ok. We were only confused because he didn't say it was a different day until latter. Actually if he stuck a post up 2 or three hours before leaving on the Sunday we might have been able to joined him on his ride too.

The latter and for that very reason and after thinking about it last night I will pass on FQ's peninsular trip.

Just finished a masters course on risk management so it goes like this
risk = fn(probability, consequence) or the old way
risk = probability x consequence

Probability I have no problem with but consequence I do given that in the middle of negotiations on a house. Mr plod consequence not so bad, writting of bike or even worse another car with it very very bad. So I'll be sticking to the selwyn sorry. I'll PM both Plug and FQ my cell no and I'll see you at the Springston Leeston Bridge at if you decide to not do the Peninsular ride. If you decide not to go txt me and we can arrange a time to meet at the river. I get ready tonight so that I'm ready even if it is 9 that you txt.

I just find it easier sometimes to go with my own plans especially where's there's a specific goal. So, what time are you planning to be at the Springston Leeston Bridge - still 11? Just in case I come along.

OK, I'm doing the peninsula ride. I would've prefered a bit more blue, but the cloud's thin and the temp's forecast to be good so hopefully what cloud there is will burn off as the day goes on.
