Martin dominates Gold Cup meeting
Guy Martin was in imperious form at Oliver's Mount, Scarborough over the weekend, dominating the International Gold Cup meeting with no less than seven wins from seven starts. The AIM Racing Yamaha rider blitzed the opposition in the 12-lap feature race to win by an astonishing 30 seconds, taking his fourth successive Gold Cup in the process. In addition, he also reclaimed the David Jefferies Trophy, having last won it in 2004, and also both of the Superbike races.
Misty conditions greeted the riders on Saturday but it didn't stop Guy and, after a slight delay to allow the fog to clear sufficiently for racing to go ahead, he dominated both of his heats in commanding fashion. The opening 8-lap Superbike race was stopped after five laps due to an incident but Guy was already over 14 seconds clear and he duly chalked up his first race win.
Next up was the opening 600cc leg and it was a tough beginning with Ryan Farquhar glued to the exhaust of the R6 Yamaha. The lap record exchanged hands but with a lap of 1m 48.139secs, Guy broke clear and he eventually took the chequered flag by almost ten seconds, his new lap record almost a second inside the old mark.
Sunday's weather was a stark contrast to Saturday and the seaside town was bathed in glorious sunshine. It was a similar story for Guy though and he took yet another start to finish victory in the Superbike race, coming home this time over twenty seconds clear of his nearest rival.
After a short break he was back out in the second 600cc race and the opposition simply couldn't get near him. Lapping consistently in the 1m48s bracket, his winning margin was again almost twenty seconds and this clinched him the prestigious David Jefferies Trophy.
To crown a quite simply brilliant weekend, he then destroyed the field in the Gold Cup race and, getting to within two tenths of his own course lap record, he took his fourth successive title, becoming only the second man in history to achieve such a feat. His margin of victory was a staggering 30.196 seconds!
At the conclusion of racing, Guy, who was never headed throughout the weekend, commented:
"What can I say, it's been an absolutely brilliant and unbelievable weekend.
I came and did what I wanted to do and every single race went to plan. It was a relaxed weekend and there was no pressure so I turned up on Saturday morning and got my head into racing mode. As soon as the racing started, I was definitely in the zone and with both bikes working perfectly, I was able to lap at a good pace and break the opposition."
"To lead every single race from start to finish was amazing and that's certainly never happened to me before! The weather was good and a good crowd turned out in force so it was a thoroughly enjoyable meeting - to make it four in a row is very satisfying. The organisers put on a great meeting - I love racing at Scarborough and I couldn't have asked for any more."
