Transfering Data From 98 LTop To XP DTop?

Need to transfer Programs and Data from my old laptop IBM Pen II running Win 98 to my new desktop running XP. Laptop screen cracked from drop (tripped on one of the cords ) and there is some internal damage (eg. disc scan won't work). The laptop does not have a CD writer and some of the data and programme installers are too big for floppys. New PC is running XP (and has a DVD burner ). I have Office 2000, and NAV 2003 (with sub paid for 2004) on CD's (so will intsall those using them). I just want to transfer the base programs I use, but want to avoid transfering any hidden crap that the NAV has not picked up (like Spy Ware, etc.).

PS: have not used XP before. Is there anything I should watch-out for (that is different from 98)?

Rider in black if the old lappy has a network cord ya could transfer data that way, but best way is just export your fav and email address/contacts and copy over your my documents and thats it
if you have a new computer start fresh only copy over email info, ie info and your picstures and documents

Get a NIC (Network Interface Card) for your desktop and connect 'em with a crossover. (Your laptop should have a NIC builtin, if it's not toooo old). NIC will cost about 20bux cable about $5.

Otherwise go to dickies and buy an adapter for your laptop hard disk to connect to your PC's IDE. I can't remember whats it's called, 5 1/2" to 3 1/2" disk adapter i think. Then you can plug your laptop HDD in your DT and just copy everything across. Just make sure you install NAV with current defs and some anti-spyware app on your XP disk before you start

All versions of windows since '95 support direct connection via parallel(Printer) port using 'laplink' style cable.

To make a direct network connection by using a DirectParallel cable

For the XP machine:

Open Network Connections.
Under Network Tasks, click Create a new connection, and then click Next.
Click Set up an advanced connection, and then click Next.
Click Connect directly to another computer, click Next, and then do one of the following:
If you want your computer to act as the host (your computer contains the information you need to access), click Host.
If you want your computer to act as the guest (your computer accesses information on another computer), click Guest, and then click Next.
In Device for this connection, click Direct Parallel (LPT1) and then click Next.
Follow the remaining instructions in the Network Connection Wizard.

I don't have a '98 machine handy for the other bit.
