Hi Lissa, really nice to hear from you.
I appreciate how you feel re being a little apprehensive about beginning.
I was terrified. . . took days to actually get on and head down my steep drive to the road.
The driveway itself was real scary ! !
I first began riding at just after dawn on Sundays (summertime) and was always home before the traffic began to build -must confess I muttered many curses on those all-too-many-early-bird drivers.
In general it was nerve racking in the early stages as I had to LEARN to ride on the road, not having had opportunities to do Courses, but it was also a fantastic experience .
I rode mainly in the hilly backroads around Warkworth for less-traffic conditions - soon learned that logging trucks and school buses live in those hills too.
I think my being careful at all times and thinking about the road ahead helped, but what helped most of all was just getting out there and doing it.

The GN I ride is a marvellous machine. Light enough not to drop -even when I did unwise things . . . she is a real school master bike and a great one to learn on. Has built my confidence hugely and given me heaps of fun while doing so. Does well on the open roads too.
I am sure you will love riding as much as I do.
I will certainly let you know when I am looking at selling the GN . . . as said to Michael, probably about early November.

More into travel and adventure. Seems to me those are BOTH taken care of by my 3rd interest.

I too have just got my first bike and am learning to ride. Am finding it hard to find places to practise without too much traffic, anyone got anywhere good that they go???

not that hard a thing to do actually. I learned on a GN250 for a year and when i decided to change up it was to a yamaha Virago 750... not much different to the Vulcan. Gns are excellant to learn on, very forgiving bikes and when you get on the next level you will really appreciate having an easy bike to make your beginner mistakes on. You'll love the vulcan tho for the extra go power!

Welcome to KB Blueskies, you will love it, stirrers galore and a good assortment of oldies hiding in here. Loads of good advice and plenty of nutters for flavour.

Slikchik, welcome also, where in Auckland are you? It makes it hard to suggest some places if we dont know where you start from.
Reccomend both of you to look into the mentoring program here in KB, you can learn heaps and meet new people too.
